Rinsing and repeating Week 9

by @ 9:58. Filed under Sports.

Did I not say to rinse and repeat? 9-5 against the spread, and my first win in weeks on the over/under made me a very happy camper.

Green Bay 33 (+2.5) @ Kansas City 22 – Losing records will not be tolerated. Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about that.
Denver 7 (+3) @ Detroit 44 – Let the bleeding commence.
San Diego 17 (-7.5) @ Minnesota 35 – Back at the hotel, that is. They sent San Diego State along as a surrogate D.
Washington 23 @ NY Jets 20 (+4-WIN) – At least I was right about the 3 and the 0.
Arizona 10 @ Tampa Bay 17 (-3.5) – Did I not say take the team with the D?
Carolina 7 (+5) @ Tennessee 20 – Boy was that an inept call. At least the under was preserved.
San Francisco 16 (+3) @ Atlanta 20 – Where, oh where as Frank Goracle gone?
Jacksonville 24 @ New Orleans 41 (-3.5) – Separation time is NOW.
Cincinnati 21 @ Buffalo 33 (+2) – And I call it riding the gravy train.
Seattle 30 @ Cleveland 33 (-2) – Un-fragging-believable; an outright OT win.
New England 24 @ Indianapolis 20 (+6.5-WIN) – If the Colts can’t stop the Pats, nobody can.
Houston 24 (+3) @ Oakland 17 – Repeating, “Just lose, baby.” Sorry Eric, you guys just don’t have the swords this year.
Dallas 38 (-3.5) @ Philadelphia 17 – McNabb to the media after the game, if he were honest – “The Boys will win the NFC East.”
Baltimore 7 (+10) @ Pittsburgh 38 – Because only one team has a defense, and that team also has the offense, you dumbshit.

Oh-so-close to .500 now at 60-62-8 ATS, 11-6-1 on the over/unders. If I keep rolling, I might make bank.

BlogWorld – quickie wrap-up

by @ 20:39. Filed under Miscellaneous.

The conferences are done, and all that’s left to do is be a Hun in the sports books and do a little wrap-up. I’m glad I made it out here, even though I haven’t dropped so much as a penny into a machine or onto a table or in a book. Because I spent most of the time in various conferences, and the rest of it trying to keep up with stuff back in Wisconsin (more on why I wasted the lunch hours doing that in a bit), I didn’t get to look through as much of the exhibits as I probably should have. Since it was only two days, I also didn’t get to go through all the conferences I wanted to (I really wanted to get into some of the sports blogging ones). The ones I did do were, to a one, very interesting.

One I originally had on my docket, but changed at the last minute, reportedly provided some serious fireworks. Since I wasn’t there, and there isn’t yet any video I’ve seen (my sources tell me it will be up sometime this weekend), I won’t comment on that except to say that the instigator really should have attended one of the earlier ones, the raising the level of discourse one.

I got to meet some new faces and put some faces to blogs that I read on a regular basis. One of those that fit in the former is John over at Argghhh! (which is now on the blogroll, so you can also consider this a roll bloat post). The guy is just great to listen to and be around. On the faces-to-blogs front, there’s Eric of The Tygrrrr Express, Katie Favazza, Dean Barnett, and a bunch more that I can’t remember at the moment. Good and gracious folks all.

When I saw that Mark Cuban would be the ending keynote speaker, I honestly didn’t know what to think about that. I knew that he’s heavily into tech, and that he is left-of-center, which came down as a big strike after the performance of most of the left-of-center folks in the political conferences. I’ll tell you, he blew me away. The man knows his stuff.

That’s about it in a nutshell. Dunno how long the not-so-reliable connection at the hotel is going to last (that’s about the only complaint I have about that), so I best hit “publish”. The good things are that it’s cheap, clean, close to the convention center (and the monorail), has free wi-fi (even if it is extremely spotty, it’s better than the Rennissaince in DC). Time to catch up one more time on things back in the land of cheese and beer, grab something to eat, and start dropping coin like the typical Vegas tourist.

Gorebal Warming update

by @ 16:04. Filed under Global "Warming".

Hot Air has the video of Glenn Beck adding lights to his MSNBC set to celebrate Coal Week. Enjoy.

Meanwhile, The Weather Channel founder John Coleman global warming the “greatest scam in history” (H/T – Hot Air commenter JiangxiDad).

Enjoy that cold weather Wisconsin; I’ll be back to suffer along with you before you know it.

Jensen to get a new trial

by @ 15:12. Filed under Law and order, Politics - Wisconsin.

Just because I’m in Vegas (I’ll just say that the Unreal one would be in 7th heaven) and I left the headphones at the hotel doesn’t mean I can’t follow along with at least some of the news. I’ll even try to follow the first lessons in not taking gratuitous cheap shots at people like Dane County pers…er, DA Brian Blanchard.

Unless Dane County DA Brian Blanchard manages to convince AG J.B. Van Hollen to appeal the decision of the District 4 Court of Appeals to the state Supreme Court, former Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen (R) will get a new trial. Hopefully, it won’t be before a kangaroo court this time. The court found that not only were the instructions given to the jury by Dane County Circuit Judge Steven Ebert to convict were improper, but that his prohibition of Jensen’s defense team to introduce evidence that the former Assembly Democratic Caucus was doing the exact same thing without reason was improper.

Well, have to go. Next conference starts in about 15 minutes, and I have to finish my final votes. Remember, vote that slate on the right sidebar one last time before 4 pm Central.

Even though BlogWorld and my hotel both have free WiFi, do not expect a liveblog. I’m here to learn how to be a better blogger (as if anything can improve this place :-)

Ah, tahellwitchit; I’m here to raid the sports books. 18-9 in the NFL the last 2 weeks should put the fear of Huns in them.

Once again the Colby team runs up against the Debate teamin Fantasy Football this weekend.

Apparently Steve is so freaked out at my complete dominance over him that he ran away and left me the keys to his blog in complete fear.

I can’t wait for Sunday.

Oh, and Scott Jensen got a new trial…

DAMMIT! No Season 7 this year

by @ 12:20. Filed under Miscellaneous.

(H/T – Curt)

At least that’s the “unofficially-official” word. The writer’s strike has allegedly pushed back Season 7 to September and Monday Night Football. I feel like my left arm was just cut to force me to let go of Marwan.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Revisions/extensions part 2 (12:14 pm 11/7/2007) – While the polls seem to have a lot of problems right now, I was able to confirm the time the polls will close – 4 pm Central tomorrow. I’ve brought this back to the top because of a few additional posts between this morning and now.

Shocka! Freeloaders are freeloaders, rock-n-roll edition

by @ 10:56. Filed under Business.

(H/T – Gabriel Malor/AoSHQ)

Last month, Radiohead self-released their latest album with a minor twist; fans downloading the mp3-only version got to choose how much, if anything, they paid for the album. Well, the results are in, and it shouldn’t surprise anybody with a tip jar on the side of the blog:

– 62% of those overall, 60% of Americans, and 64% of those outside the US decided that free is free.
– The 36% of those outside the US that paid anything paid an average of US$4.64.
– The 40% of those from the US that paid anything paid an average of $8.05.

At an average of $6.34 per paid purchase, that’s $2.41 per download. Doesn’t sound like much, especially since Apple’s charging $0.99 (or is it up to $1.25?) per song. The usual band would have to book lots of time in a studio, which would seriously eat into the profits. Fortunately for Radiohead, they got enough from their previous albums and tours to have their own home studio, where they recorded most of the work.

Nice to see they appear to have made a new model of the music biz work, even if they won’t get squat from the forthcoming CD release.

Sheboygan city attorney backs down

News, and probably updates as they come in, at Sheboygan Shenanigans. I will wait until further details come in before shifting the various City of Sheboygan sites off the “Harrassers in government” portion of the blogroll, but they will remain on the “Personal links” portion.

Hats off to FranklinNOW.com

by @ 9:30. Filed under Miscellaneous.

They’ve progressed well beyond mere blogdom and have become a lively community. Yes, some of the usual suspects there are slightly dysfunctional, but IMHO, that’s what really makes a community (just as long as the dysfunction doesn’t become the community, that is).

It’s a wee bit late for the 2007 Weblog Awards, but I think they could just be nominated for the Best Online Community award in 2008.

Social conservatism (1980-2007)

by @ 8:46. Filed under Politics - National.

If it sounds like I’m depressed, I am. The Republican race has turned into the right-of-Communists’ version of Hiliary (with better legs) versus Slick Willie (with better hair), with Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney picking up all the endorsements “that matter”.

It remains to be seen whether the endorsement of Giuliani by Pat Robertson will simply be the death knell of social conservatives or the death knell of Republicans as a whole.

The other shoe is set to drop in Pakistan

by @ 7:01. Filed under War on Terror.

(H/T – Curt/Flopping Aces))

I’m sure you’ve heard by now all the bloviating over Pakistani strongman Pervez Musharraf’s declaration of martial law, busting up their Supreme Court and muzzling the Pakistani press. What you’re probably not going to hear from the LeftStream Media is the semi-official reason why – he’s declaring war on Al Qaeda. Supporting that is a report that Pakistan has pulled many of its troops from the Kashmir region.

If this is true and not the same old tightrope walking Musharraf’s done since 2001, it’s a big development. Much of Pakistan’s elite, namely the lawyers and the presstitutes, which is caught up in the wake of the martial law, is solidly in the camp of Al Qaeda. Of course, so is Pakistan’s ISI, which is presumably what Musharraf would need to rely on to effectively combat any internal opposition to him.

In any case, it’s more complicated than simply Musharraf wanting to hold onto power, though that is undoubtedly his main goal.

Roll bloat – Awards edition

by @ 6:31. Filed under The Blog.

Jim over at bRight & Early turned me onto Liberty Pundit. I should’ve done this when Sister Toldjah had him guest-blog, but I’m a wee bit dense.

In any case, hopefully you’re not as dense as me, and decide to add him to the roll. Oh, and vote for him in the TTLB Best of the Top 5001-6750 category, as well as the rest of the NRE slate.

Catching up on a lost couple days

by @ 23:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Been busy making last-minute preparations for Vegas, but there’s a few things that need to be commented upon:

  • The Milwaukee County Board thinks that not only is county government as a whole entitled to a 3.8% increase in property taxes, but they’re worth $52,704 if they survive 2008. Bravo Sierra, kids.
  • Down go the school referenda. Bravo Zulu, West Bend and Hartford. (for those that can’t tell the difference between Sierra and Zulu, the former stinks)
  • Fred Thompson stomped on the land mine that is the Human Life Amendment. While I appreciate Thompson’s committment to federalism, the fact of the matter is that ship sunk shortly after I was born. There are only two ways to reverse Roe v Wade; hope that 5 Justices don’t believe in precedent for precedent’s sake, or pass a federal Constitutional amendment.
  • So the Paul-nuts raised themselves a pretty penny (actually 420,000,000 of them) yesterday. Go win the Libertarian Party nomination (oops; they’ve been exposed as losers for decades), or try to take over the DhimmiRAT Party as they’re in 100% agreement on your biggest issue (only problem is, Hiliary is still running things, and Fort Marcy Park is looking a little empty).
  • Guess David Obey (Dhimm-No Talk Radio Here part of Wisconsin) has a very odd definition of success. The way I see it, if there are fewer and fewer Islamokazis stepping up to fight for the Worldwide Caliphate, we’re being successful.
  • The TV writers are on strike. The good news; no new Letterman/Leno/et al. The bad; Season 7 of “24” isn’t completely in the can yet. Maybe they should hire the Jack Sack.
  • Speaking of TV, I heard NBC is going Green. They should’ve completed the blackout of the studio, and shut off the mics as well.
  • Gas prices are starting to match the oil futures price. “Thank” you, Plastic Pelosi, for pissing off the Turks, and “thank” you, envirowhackos, for 30 years of nothing positive done on the domestic supply side of the equation. If S(l)ick Willie hadn’t locked up the Utah coal for the Indonesians’ benefit, you’d get lumps of coal to go along with $4/gallon gas this Christmas. That’s right; $4/gallon gas before the end of the year.

BlogWorld – Warning Order

by @ 22:20. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Uncle Jimbo gave Vegas fair warning. Don’t think I qualify as depraved (actually, I’m glad I don’t), but I’m definitely a maurauder.

Even though the Bar didn’t make the finals of the 2007 Weblog Awards (reminder, vote the slate to your right), I’m headed to Vegas for BlogWorld.

Not only will I hopefully learn how to be a better blogger, I’ll make some bank in the sports books. In the meantime, I’ve got the guest-bloggers warmed up.

Operation Exploitation – 3 more voting days

Slight change in the Operation Exploitation lineup

by @ 13:46. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Blackfive reports that it seems that the oh-so-tolerant lieberals are going to try to do to the Best Military Blog category what they’re successfully done so far to the Funniest Blog, Best Blog and Best Comic Strip categories. Therefore, he’s recommending that, instead of making Blackfive a 3-time winner, that Michael Yon win this year’s award.

The good news is Mike still has a healthy lead. The bad is the script monkeys of the left are unusually-effective at wiping out healthy leads. Therefore, my last 4 votes will be going to Mike, and yours should be too. Don’t let the lieberal script monkeys win.

While I’m at it, I need to correct a major oversight in the roll.

Project Valour-IT update: Match time starting to become successful

by @ 12:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Time to follow up on Michelle Malkin’s and her readers’ challenge to the left-of-center half of the blogosphere (including me) Well, I guess upping the ante to $500 $550 $750 $800 $1,050 $1,550 is finally starting to pay off.

Thank you, Insanity (Team Army), Greg from the Left (adding the widget for Team Air Force would be appreciated), The Online Lunchpail (Team Navy/USCG), and Springbored’s Springboard (Team Navy/USCG), for stepping up to the plate.

There’s still $30 from my pocket and a heap from others’ pockets to be donated in the name of 6 more left-of-center blogs.

As a reminder, you don’t have to be left-of-center to start or continue helping Project Valour-IT. To join a team, head here to get started. To just donate, mash one of the team’s widgets over to your left. You can also go into the Project Valour-IT auctions and start bidding on items the teams have put up. The money goes to the team the person who donated the item designated.

Revisions/extensions (1:20 pm 11/5/2007) – Make that $25 left in my pool; Lawyers, Guns and Money stepped up for Team Navy/USCG. As a housekeeping item, I will finish settling up either on the morning of the 11th or when we get 5 more left-of-center blogs to answer the bell (part of that depends on where I am when they answer; I might be in a location where I do not trust security).

Revisions/extensions part 2 (3:27 pm 11/5/2007) – The latest info direct from FbL, head fundraiser, is over here.

Revisions/extensions part 3 (9:41 pm 11/6/2007) – Make that $20. F15mech reports below Balloon Juice hopped on board Team Army.
