If it sounds like I’m depressed, I am. The Republican race has turned into the right-of-Communists’ version of Hiliary (with better legs) versus Slick Willie (with better hair), with Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney picking up all the endorsements “that matter”.
It remains to be seen whether the endorsement of Giuliani by Pat Robertson will simply be the death knell of social conservatives or the death knell of Republicans as a whole.
If by social conservatism you mean traditional values, I think those are alive and well, as evidence by the passage of the marriage definition amendment and the recommendation of reinstating the death penalty last year, in spite of the Democratic “sweep.”
And Tuesday there was more evidence. NJ rejected a Dem plan to finance stem cell research and Oregon turned down a cigarette tax. I wonder how a vote on a cigarette tax would fare in WI?
I think the GOP needs a good lie down right now because if it continues running in several directions it threatens splitting with all parts falling deep into a coma that will end with its death upon the inauguration of Hillary Rodham Clinton in late January 2009.
