Czar-mania

by @ 8:54. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Jim Lynch decided to award me the title of Omlete Czar as part of the Czar Craze coming out of the ObamiNation Administration. He’s got a few of my friends as other Czars:

– Czar of all Czars – Jack Bauer
– Babes Czar – Wyatt Earp
– Tango Czarina – Fausta Wertz
– Jedi Czar – The Jawa Report
– Moron Czar – Ace
– Pirate Czarrrr and Beach Czar – William Teach

A couple more for the good of the order:

Humor czar – Christian Schneider
Beer czar – Jib
Rule 5 czar – Robert Stacy McCain
Links and Despair Czar – Allahpundit
Czar of Trogs – Lance Burri
Czarina of TV appearances – Mary Katharine Ham

Now, do I give Flight Czar to Asian Badger or Dave?

It’s the final countdown

by @ 7:38. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Today is the last day most TV stations will be broadcasting analog signals. Let’s celebrate with some one-hit wonder…

Tim Cuprisin of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has a list of what will be happening today:

 • Channels 18 (WVTV), 24 (WCGV), and 30 (WVCY) previously shut down their analog broadcasts.
 • At 9 am, Channels 10 (WMVS), 36 (WMVT) and 49 (WBME) will shut down analog broadcasts.
 • Also at 9 am, Channel 63 (WYTU-LP) will cease Telemundo broadcasting and begin simulcasting the CBS and local programming carried by Weigel corporate sister Channel 58 (WDJT) in analog. Because the mandatory digital conversion does not affect low-power stations, The Business Journal of Milwaukee previously reported that Channels 63 and 41 (WMLW-CA, also owned by Weigel) will continue to broadcast an analog signal after today.
 • At 11:30 am, Channel 6 (WITI) will bring back Albert the Alleycat and the playing of the national anthem one more time as part of a special signoff of its analog signal. They then wil run a loop of digital transition information for the next two weeks, with audio still available at 87.7 MHz on the FM dial for those two weeks.
 • At noon, Channel 12 (WISN) will shut down the analog signal.
 • Also at noon, Channel 4 (WTMJ) will run a 2-hour loop of digital transition information, with analog signal shutdown at 2 pm.
 • At 11:59 pm, Channels 55 (WPXE) and 58 will shut down their analog signals. That does not affect the simulcast of Channel 58’s signal on Channel 63.

For those of you who have every TV/VCR/DVR hooked up to ATSC tuners (either built-in or converter box), cable, satellite or AT&T’s U-verse, or watch nothing but low-power TV, you’re golden. If you still have at least one TV, VCR or DVR that isn’t and don’t like or can’t get the very-limited choices low-power TV offers, you’re about to be SOL.

Revisions/extensions (8:20 am 6/12/2009, with Part 2 at 8:28 am 6/12/2009) – A couple of housekeeping notes based on the fact that the FCC has ordered the abandonment Channels 52-69 so that they can be auctioned off for other telecommunications services:

 • WVTV will be returning to physical channel 18 from its pre-transition digital physical channel 61 at 9 am. That means that those of you who get WVTV via antenna will need to rescan.
 • Channel 63 (about to become the analog version of WDJT) will soon vacate that channel. Weigel does have a construction permit on file with the FCC to move the analog signal to Channel 49 (about to be vacated by WBME), with the same coverage as the current Channel 63 signal.
 • WMLW has a application in to the FCC to assume physical channel 24 for its analog signal as physical channel 41 has been assigned to digital stations in Green Bay and Rockford, and WCGV will remain on physical channel 25.

R&E part 3 (10:40 am 6/12/2009) – The loss of the analog Telemundo signal did not affect either the Time Warner carriage of Telemundo (on cable channel 27), its broadcast as a low-power digital station on physical channel 17, or its simulcast on WBME’s digital signal at virtual subchannel 49.4 (physical subchannel 48.4).

Relating to Weigel, and specifically WMLW, while it does have a low-powered digital signal at channel 13, the return to the frequency by Grand Rapids’ WZZM after its pre-transition relocation to channel 39 means that prior plans to make the digital signal full-powered had to be set aside, and it will continue to be available on WDJT’s digital signal at virtual subchannel 58.2 (physical subchannel 46.2).

Also, WMKE-CA, which operates on Channel 7, runs America One programming, and is essentially available only in the northern 2/3rds of Milwaukee County (and notably, not in Oak Creek), apparently will continue to broadcast its analog signal. The parent company does not have any plans to construct a digital tower.

One of these entertainers is Steve’s favorite.

Can you guess which one?

Saturn is getting a new owner.

by @ 13:29. Filed under Miscellaneous.

From The Egg-Man’s perspective, it is an open wheel guy.

I mean if Jack Rousch had bought Saturn then we might have something good here.

I thought this might help Steve after his return from Canada.

H/T Bitter

Elk Cuban Sammiches.  (Because Steve is killing stuff in Canada you know)

Today’s Outdoor Wire features recipes from the winners of the Alabama Wildlife Federation’s Wild Game Cook-Off. I don’t think it’s possible to express how jealous I am of the judges for that contest. I would do just about anything to get a seat on that panel. ANYTHING. (Srlsy, call me, Alabama folks. CALL ME.)

I figured this is the kind of audience that would appreciate the recipes, if for no other reason than to drool over them. Today I’ll feature the overall winner.

Elk Cuban Sandwiches

Cuban Bread:
Starter:
Three-quarter teaspoon of yeast
One-third cup of warm (90-100 deg) water
One-third cup of all purpose flour
Dissolve yeast in water till foamy – 5 minutes, then add flour and store in the fridge for 1 day (or up to 3 days)

Bread:
Four and a half teaspoons yeast (2 packets)
One and a half cups of warm water (90-100 deg)
Four tablespoons of lard – cut up (he used Crisco sticks for the cook off, but lard is better, of course)
One tablespoon sugar
One tablespoon sea salt
One-half batch of the Starter
Four to five cups of all purpose flour

Elk or Venison:

Take hind quarter roast and add dry rub of your preference and marinate overnight. Over hot fire, grill until medium rare or medium at the most. Slice thinly with a deli slicer if available.

Aran’s instructions for the bread follow: Dissolve the yeast in four table spoons of the water and leave for 5 minutes, then add sugar and salt. Add the cut lard, rest of the water and then the half batch of starter.

In his Kitchen Aid mixing bowl, he put on the dough hook attachment and start adding flour 1 cup at a time. On a setting of 4, I mix for 9 minutes. Add the flour until the dough firms up and is more clingy to the dough hook. The sides of the bowl should be clean. It usually takes almost 5 cups of flour.

Dump the dough out, clean the bowl and spray it with Pam. Then return the dough to the bowl, cover it and let it rise for 45 minutes. Lightly dust the clean counter with flour and lay the dough out.

“For the cook-off I made 200 small rolls,” Aran said. “Each batch made 30 rolls. I made a long log (2 foot) and cut 30 rolls out of it. Place 15 rolls on parchment paper, cover with parchment paper and a towel – Let it rise for an hour and fifteen minutes. Heat your oven to 350 degrees and cook for 18 minutes.

“For my family I make Cuban loaves, which you do the same way but divide the same dough into two equal loafs and let it rise for the same time. Before you bake it, soak two pieces of twine in water, lay one lengthwise on each loaf (end to end). After baking remove the twine and you will have a loaf worthy enough to sell on Calle Ocho in Miami.”

If you opt for the larger Cuban loaves, increase the oven time to 25 minutes at 350 degrees.

Weekend Links

by @ 20:51. Filed under Miscellaneous.

First off: Hi to Steve’s readers! Steve was a big help to me a few weeks ago when I took a week off from my blog, and I am happy to return the favor. Rumor has it that he’s currently trying to convince the Packers to accept him as a walk-on QB, but let’s just keep that between ourselves for the time being. I’m sure he’ll fill us in on the details when he returns. Just make sure to act surprised when he tells you ;)

Ok, with that said, here are some weekend links for your perusal:

—– Must-read: Doug Ross takes a look at Obama’s actions and decisions over the course of the last 100+ days and has come to the same conclusion that Mark Levin has, which is to say that he believes that this administration is “[a]s close to a dictatorship as this country has ever seen.” I’m nowhere near that belief yet, but there are definitely good points which Ross brings up that are troubling.

—– Rep. John Sullivan (R-OK) has checked into the Betty Ford Clinic for help with alcohol addiction, and is taking a temporary leave from Congress. According to the Tulsa World news outlet, he has been open about his drinking problems in the past. Here’s hoping and praying he gets the help he needs at the BFC and that over the long term he wins his battle against alcohol addiction.

—– Legal eagle Bill Jacobson takes a look of the defenders of Sonia Sotomayor’s judicial rulings/decisions, and finds them, well, lacking.

—– The amazing Susan Boyle did not win Britain’s Got Talent – she came in second place, but in the hearts and minds of people all over the world, she’s still a winner … and there’s no doubt she’ll be getting a recording contract from somewhere.

—– Has Obama “expanded the lobbying ban,” as the WaPo reports, or have they loosened restrictions, as Roll Call writes? Hmmm. I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle.

—–ABC reports that the National Archives has offered a $50,000 cash reward for that missing Clinton hard drive. If they offered several million for it back – oh, enough to pay off old campaign debts – I suspect Hillary would consider returning it.

—– Change you can believe in: CNN reports on how the Obama admin has said it will “continue” to utilize the “states secret” privilege in a case involving a suit by an Oregon-based outfit the US has determined to be a “terrorist organization.” The al-Haramain Islamic Foundation is suing the gov’t over its use of the alleged use of the warrantless wiretapping program against the foundation.

—– Fab Euro-blogger Michael van der Galien has a post up about the announcement earlier this week that conservative Tucker Carlson is planning on starting a “right-leaning” version of HuffPo called “The Daily Caller” (thedailycaller.com), which Carlson claims will go live “within weeks.” van der Galien writes:

“I wish Tucker best of luck with this new venture – I am pretty sure that there actually is a lot of room for a ‘right-leaning Huffington Post’ – but he has to understand that he has to truly blow everybody away after announcing his new project before a group of bloggers, and telling them he will be better than the HuffPo, Hot Air, or any other existing site, and faster than Drudge. Those are some darn high expectations: You have to wonder whether the man understands what he’s getting himself into.”

Stay tuned …

Hot Read Thursday part 2 – Kevin McCullough’s “American Idol: sign of the culture war that’s brewing?”

by @ 6:05. Filed under Miscellaneous.

I admit that I’m not one of those that watches “American Idol”. Kevin McCullough, co-host of BMX Radio along with Stephen Baldwin (yes, THAT Stephen Baldwin), does, and he links the results of the final three of this season’s run to the culture wars. Once again, I’ll tease you with the close:

There will be more debate in the days to come. And my rule still generally holds true – originality will usually trump the field.

This year, in the largest vote ever cast, America instead voted for tradition…

Now if we could just get those who focus on public policy to do the same!

Hot smashes – Lazy Friday edition

by @ 13:53. Filed under Miscellaneous.

No, the Scramble has not returned, and probably won’t return in its previous form. However, since I’m feeling a bit lazy on a cloudly Friday, I feel the need to take a trip through the oversized feed reader for some ideas. Let’s start with an ObamaCard commercial from my sometimes-allies at the RNC (who seem to have “borrowed” from Fausta and me)…

 • (H/T – Charlie SykesGallup found that for the first time in the 15 years it asked the question, more people call themselves pro-life than pro-choice. While that’s encouraging, I have to throw some cold water on this. First, they’re not exactly voting their beliefs (see Obama, Barack). Second, the “secular powers-that-be” among the right-of-center crowd want to remove the difference between the two halves of the bipartisan Party-In-Government by adopting the death-on-demand ‘Rat position.
 • Related to the first point immediately above, James T. Harris explains the problem – dependency.
 • President Obama said that the long-term debt load is “unsustainable”. Somehow, I doubt he’s going to be cutting anything other than defense. Indeed, Robert McCain (who, IMHO, should have been the McCain on the ballot last year) explains why it’s a signal for massive tax hikes to make Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI, and my Congresscritter) predictions of a 40%-of-GDP federal spending rate true. Along the same lines, Stephen Green has the translation of the day – “I’m going to tax you bastards back to the Stone Age.”
 • (H/T – Purple Avenger) The Washington Post found that Smoot-Hawley II Porkulus has kicked off a trade war, one that is even shuttering American factories because they use foreign raw materials that are not in general domestic supply. Those who don’t remember history, let me do the math for you – major economic downturn plus hyper-protectionism plus massive government spending equals a decade-long depression.
 • The Heritage Foundation ran the numbers on the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade-tax scheme between 2012 and 2035. Let’s see – an cumulative inflation-adjusted reduction of GDP by $7.4 trillion, a yearly job loss of 844,000 (with peaks of nearly 2,000,000), an inflation-adjusted increase in electric rates of 90% (how’s that plug-in car looking, GM?), an inflation-adjusted increase in gasoline prices of 74%, an inflation-adjusted increase in natural gas prices of 55% (how’s that CNG bus looking?), and an inflation-adjusted increase in the federal debt of 29% (which just speeds up the unsustainability of the debt). All this for a fraction of a degree in temperature change (and that’s using the faulty models that, had we stuck the numbers from 25 years ago into them, would get today’s climate wrong)?
 • (H/T – Sister Toldjah) Speaking of liberals killing an economy, Dana Furchtgott-Roth, former chief economist at the Labor Department explains how a massive raise in the minimum wage in American Samoa, mandated by Congress 2 years ago, is killing the economy there. That just demonstrates the Law of (Un)Intended Consequences.

Second Tuesday of the month alert

This is the Emergency Blogging System. It has been activated once again because it is the second Tuesday of the month.

It’s time for the May edition of Drinking Right. Other than the fact that it’s May, all of the particulars remain the same. Drinking Right will be at Papa’s Social Club, 7718 W. Burleigh in Milwaukee at 7 pm. Come on down, drink a few drinks, eat some pizza, and enjoy what is expected to be the last night before the countdown to a “smoke-free” (unless you’re at an Indian casino) Wisconsin officially starts.

For those of you who are “American Idol” fans, Dickie even runs that on the bar TVs, so you can’t use that as an excuse.

This concludes this activation of the Emergency Blogging System.

Sunday Hot Read – If Doc hosted the WHCD – UPDATE – Monday Hot Read – If Doug hosted the WHCD

by @ 18:09. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Since I’m not a fan of red carpets, slavish presstitutes, anything called “prom”, or dancing, I missed the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. It seems some two-bit hack decided to take her 15 minutes of fame and wish those of us on the right dead.

Doc decided to run with what he would have said had he been the emcee, and it is far funnier than anything that the aforementioned two-bit hack said last night. Just a sample:

I was hoping to see more people from the White House Press Secretary’s office. I see “Baby Face” Gibbs over there. Where’s Keith Olbermann? I look forward to being the “Worst Person in the World” for the next two weeks, so I at least wanted to give him a wave. What’s that? He couldn’t come? Stuck in a bathtub? Ah, what a shame.

Go, read it all.

Revisions/extensions (6:43 am 5/11/2009) – Doug Powers also ran with the theme (H/T – Michelle Malkin). Just one of the forehand smashes:

“The White House says that the president had no prior knowledge of that 747 buzzing of Manhattan. Is it really a good idea to entrust our national security to somebody who can’t even install The Club on his own jet?”

EBS auto-pilot

by @ 8:02. Filed under Miscellaneous.

This is the Emergency Blogging System. It has been activated because Steve is out of it, and Shoebox is on vacation, and 4 days with nothing is just too long.

First things first, Steve went to yet another Tea Party yesterday, this time a Tea’d Off one in Racine with Fred and close to 300 of his closest friends. They did something a bit different with this one; they made some customized golf balls available (hence the “Tea’d Off”). Somewhere on his “smartphone of dead battery” are a few pictures and video of Fred’s speech.

Next; the Brewers. The EBS is activated for their missing luck, missing pitching, and now missing hitting.

Finally, the “There’s No Way Out of TARP” theme continues. Neil Cavuto stated on yesterday’s show that the Feds aren’t giving up their stock warrants on companies that repaid the TARP. The appropriate exit song…

Eggs on the road – Tax Week

by @ 8:29. Tags: , ,

Besides being Tax season (and indeed, partly because of it), it’s road-trip season. My trips for the week:

– This one isn’t actually a trip, but I’ll be running the weekly “24” liveblog over at Blogs.4Bauer tonight. The fun will start a bit before 8.

– If it’s the second Tuesday of the month, it’s time for Drinking Right. I need to drink heavily after last week’s disaster, and Dickie over at Papa’s Social Club (7718 W. Burleigh in Milwaukee) is kind enough to serve us starting at 7 pm. He even throws in pizza from Mama’s next door.

– Wednesday is the Tax Day Tea Party. Blogging will likely be non-existant that day because I will be on the road all day: Madison at the Capitol (King Street entrance) at 11, Appleton at Fox Banquets (111 E. Kimball) at 5:30, and possibly a quick stop in Fort Atkinson (Municipal Building on Main) at 4.

– Saturday is potentially another full day. The only thing confirmed is a Tea’d Off party at Racine City Hall (where 6th, 7th, and Washington meet) at noon, though it is likely I’ll add the Sammies down in Chicago to the list.

Big Brown Leaves a Big, Brown Streak

by @ 5:25. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Bill O’Reilly was invited to speak at a fund raiser for the It Happened to Alexa organization.  It Happened to Alexa is an organization that provides support to rape survivors.  The organization’s founder, Alexa Branchini, is herself, the survivor of a brutal rape.

Following the announcement of O’Reilly’s speaking engagement, a blogger at Think Progress, a George Soros funded organization, attacked O’Reilly and his support for Alexa’s organization saying that he believed rape victims were “to blame” for these comments on his radio show:

O’REILLY: So anyway, these two girls come in from the suburbs and they get bombed, and their car is towed because they’re moronic girls and, you know, they don’t have a car. So they’re standing there in the middle of the night with no car. And then they separate because they’re drunk. They separate, which you never do. All right.

Now Moore, Jennifer Moore, 18, on her way to college. She was 5-foot-2, 105 pounds, wearing a miniskirt and a halter top with a bare midriff. Now, again, there you go. So every predator in the world is gonna pick that up at two in the morning. She’s walking by herself on the West Side Highway, and she gets picked up by a thug. All right. Now she’s out of her mind, drunk.

And the thug takes her over to New Jersey in the cab and kills her and rapes her and does all these terrible things to her. And the thug is so stupid, he uses her cell phone, and the cops trace it back to him and they — and they arrest him and charge him with murder. He had a prostitute girlfriend with him, and she’s charged as an accessory to murder. But Jennifer Moore is in the ground. She’s dead.

Before we go any further, let me be clear that I don’t believe rape victims ever “ask to be raped.”  Rape is one of the cruelest crimes known and is committed by individuals who are cowards who have no other way ability to exert “power.”  However, what O’Reilly is describing is not a woman “asking for rape” but rather an individual who made bad choices that put her in a position, not of “deserving”, “asking for” or even “inviting” rape but of creating a circumstance where the odds of an assault were greatly increased.

Think I’m trying to dance for O’Reilly?  I’m not.  I don’t see this tragic situation any differently than if Thing 1 and Thing 2 once old enough, decided to go to Mexico for spring break.  After having too much to drink they decide to wander in town in search of a new drinking establishment.  For whatever reason they separate and being inebriated, wander into seedy parts of town.  Being young, caucasian, unable to speak Spanish and there during spring break, a time when folks are known to carry lots of cash, one of them is assaulted, robbed and tragically killed.  Would I be angry, vengeful, hate filled at the person who did that?  Absolutely!  Would I also be screaming loudly in my mourning “how could you be so dumb?”  You bet!

So anyway….

O’Reilly responded by sending Jesse Watters after the blog article to find out why she had a problem with O’Reilly helping Alexa’s foundation.  You can see that exchange here.

Think Progress and the rest of the Soros funded left didn’t like O’Reilly showing Terkel how big time is played so they went after O’Reilly’s advertisers in an attempt to get them to drop the O’Reilly show.

Today, UPS announced that they were dropping their advertising on the O’Reilly show.  According to this article and others, Think Progress is claiming that they caused UPS to drop their support.  Maybe so.

In the original response to Think Progress, UPS said:

In response to our Stop Supporting The O’Reilly Harassment Machine campaign, UPS told us yesterday that it was investigating whether to continue supporting O’Reilly’s show. “We are sensitive to the type of television programming where our messages and presence are associated and continually review choices to affect future decisions,” spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg told us.

UPS subsequently sent this message:

Thank you for sending an e-mail expressing concern about UPS advertising during the Bill O’Reilly show on FOX News. We do consider such comments as we review ad placement decisions which involve a variety of news, entertainment and sports programming. At this time, we have no plans to continue advertising during this show. [emphasis in thinkprogress.org post]

Apparently UPS believes that O’Reilly is inappropriate for its advertising dollars.  The ironic part is that there was a big UPS ad blinking across the Think Progress site tonight, as I was researching this post.

I don’t always like O’Reilly but in this case, I think he was right.  Fedex will be getting my business from now on.  The only thing I’ll be able to think about when I see another “Brown” commercial will be the similarity to the streaks I see in 10 year old boy’s underwear!

More Of a Guideline Really

by @ 10:00. Filed under Economy, Miscellaneous, Politics - National.

After getting a taunting from President Obama in his press conference:

“To a bunch of the critics out there, I’ve already said, show me your budget! I’m happy to have that debate.”

the Republican leadership responded with this document entitled “The Republican Road to Recovery.”  Numerous bastions of the right, including Redstate.com, have linked to this document and thrown a reply taunt along the lines of, “Ha!  You wanted a budget?  Here it is.  Let’s start the debate!  Are you chicken Mr. President?”

What?  You’re kidding me right? (Hey, those of you on the left who have accused me of inconsistency, pay attention)

How many times have we on the right, ridiculed, rightly so, President Obama or one of his minions (paging Mr. Geithner) for tossing out a list of platitudes and calling it a plan?  Geithner got hammered for twice attempting that approach.  Obama got hammered for taking that approach with his stimulus plan and his budget proposal.  After pickling the left for taking the nonsubstantive approach, the Republican leadership decides that they would take the same approach and theirs should hailed as a plan worthy of debate?

Dear Republican leadership:

Shrinking government, simplifying taxes and disposing of stupidity like global warming taxes are the equivalent of motherhood and apple pie to conservatives.  We’re with you.  However, addressing higher fixed costs of government (non discretionary spending) with statements like:

Republicans seek to ensure that the federal budget cannot grow faster than families’ ability to pay the bill.

addressing health care challenges with:

Republicans seek to provide universal access to affordable health care and to address Medicare and Medicaid’s trillion dollar unfunded liabilities with common-sense reforms that ensure our children and grandchildren can secure benefits in the future.

and laying out an energy policy with:

Instead of taxing all energy users with a new energy tax that will cost up to $3,128 per household, Republicans want energy independence with increased exploration and the development of new renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar.

while providing scant if any detail about how you would actually accomplish your stated goal, does not pass muster to even be called “A plan.”

Worse, the Republican “plan” has hardly a number in it anywhere.  There is no information showing what the Republican’s “plan” spending would be, no information showing what the revenue would be and no information showing how their plan would lower or eliminate the massive debt that the Obama plan has us headed toward!

Sadly, the bulk of this plan looks far too much like what we have come to expect from the current Republican leadership.  If you read the document you will see that well over half of the document is used to complain about what the Democrats are doing.  Actually, if you just count columns, I come up with something like 2/3rds of the document being anti something rather than for something.  I certainly understand the need to frame the problem.  However, people are looking for answers and solutions.  Answers and soltuions do not have sentences that start with “The Democrat’s” or “The President’s.”  To make it worse, the few scarce numbers that are provided in the document are mostly numbers pointing to the President’s plan.

This “plan” points out, in spades, the reason that the Republicans had trouble in the last election; they are not leading the parade, they are nothing but bystanders armed with rotten tomatoes, watching the parade go by.

If this is the best this group can come up with, well, I think it’s time to enroll in some French classes.

Global Warming Comes Every Spring

by @ 10:21. Filed under Miscellaneous.

At least that’s what President Obama would now have you believe.  Look at Obama’s comments regarding the flooding that is occurring in the Red River Valley:

“If you look at the flooding that’s going on right now in North Dakota and you say to yourself, ‘If you see an increase of 2 degrees, what does that do, in terms of the situation there?’ ” the president told the reporters. “That indicates the degree to which we have to take this seriously.”

Obama began by saying that “the science around climate change is real; it is potentially devastating.”

I’ve been a resident of the upper Midwest my entire life.  I’m very familiar with the Red River Valley having most of my extended family still living in the Valley.  With that background, I have to admit some confusion on President Obama’s remarks.

My recollection of the Red River area is that it gets very cold and typically receives a fair amount of snow each winter.  My recollection also is that melting in the spring tends to turn snow to water.  That water needs a place to run off.  Given the scale of the Valley area, that can be a lot of snow becoming a lot of water running to basically, one spot.  When a lot of water runs to one spot, that tends to create rising water.  When the water rises too much, because too much snow turned into too much water, that creates flooding.

Maybe President Obama believes that because there is a river running through this area and it’s way up north, the river is carrying water from the melting arctic ice caps and that is causing the flooding? Nope, while most of the rivers in the US do run from north to south, the Red River is north of the Laurentian Divide. As a result, the Red River is one of the few rivers in the US that actually runs north, toward the ice caps. I’ll bet the President doesn’t know that!

OK, maybe I’m being a bit too technical for the President.  Maybe a simpler view would help.

Obviously, the flooding is driven by moisture in the area. Take a look at this chart from NDSU and you will see that the Fargo area, the heart of the Valley, has received moisture that is about equal to the most moisture ever received. A ha! Global Warming! Um, nope. You see, the record to date for the most moisture recorded in the valley is the ’96 – ’97 winter. Um, no, that’s not 1996, that’s 1896! My history tells me that there weren’t a lot of carbon belching engines at that time. In fact, there weren’t even a lot of carbon belching people in this area at that time!

In a speech that he gave on the night that he was assured the Presidential nomination by the Democrats, Barack Obama said that as a result of his nomination:

this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal

Hmmm, I guess he was being literal, he only controls the oceans and not the rivers.  I wonder who controls the rivers?  Maybe it’s one of those spots that we haven’t been able to fill in Treasury?

Pinky And The Brain

by @ 9:37. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Yesterday I wrote on Geithner’s new Public Private Partnership Investment Program.  It seemed to me that for having missed 3 self imposed deadlines and allowing the markets to roil each time he did, his final plan was woefully lacking in complexity or uniqueness so as to explain why it took Geithner so long to spit it out.  I think most able minded individuals could have come up with a version of “Just another bailout” in far shorter time.

The question I was left with after reviewing the PPPIP was “what has Geithner been doing?”  Now we know.

This morning, Geithner and President Obama have unveiled a new initiative they are taking to congress.  They now believe that a big reason why the economy is in the trouble it is is that large financial companies didn’t have anyone to tell them “no.”  They reason that if someone had been able to tell them “no,” then the companies would have been compliant and we all would be living in financial Nirvana today.

Not feeling like they’ve socialized the financial industry enough, Obama and Geithner will be asking Congress for the ability to:

initiate the seizure of non-bank financial companies, such as large insurers, investment firms and hedge funds, whose collapse would damage the broader economy.

Admittedly, some additional oversight seems to be warranted after what we’ve experienced.  In my mind, a big piece of the oversight and change in regulations should be focused on the rating agencies who continually priced assets as if they were gold and diamonds when in fact they knew they were more like iron ore and copper…still valuable but at a significantly diminished value.  However, as Obama has done on nearly every change he’s implemented, he’s not satisfied with “improvement.”  Obama’s view of change is only satisfied with a complete takeover and control of whatever the issue is he’s focused on.

In defense of their request, Geithner and the administration state:

According to the administration officials, the government could have been better equipped to deal with AIG aggressively before it engaged in behavior that was so risky, its failure threatened to bring down the entire financial system with it.

“Before it engaged?”  That doesn’t sound like a company in collapse.  That sounds like further dictation of what an industry can or can’t do.  Yeah, that’s working out so well for all the GSE or GSE like enterprises.  Let’s just look at Fannie, Freddie, Amtrak, US post office etc.  Can you find one in these or others where the government is involved “before they engage in behavior that is risky,” that operates for a purpose other than lobbying Congress for it’s future life blood?

I think it’s now safe to say that Geithner did not spend the last two months putting together his PPPIP.  Rather, at the direction of Obama, he has been working on a plan and talking points that makes another industry servants to the dictates of their new government masters.  In another time, this may have passed for absurd.  Now, it’s just more of business as usual.  It looks like for the past two months, rather than finding solutions to the issues immediately in front of us, Pinky and The Brain have spent their time doing “The same thing they do every night, Pinky—try to take over the world.
