Football Mania!

The NFL season is just around the bend, and I’ve got a few housekeeping items to take care of:

– First things first, I wil be back to defend my over-.500 regular season record against the spread from last year (123-120-2, with a 20-13-1 on the two-picks-weekly over/unders). As always, they’ll be cross-posted at The Wisconsin Sports Bar.
– Fred will once again be running at least 1 Cheddarsphere fantasy league, and possibly 2. The Spiraling Colby is already in the air.
– Ick has a pair of items lined up for us; a fantasy league and a pick-’em contest.

  • Peter has 34 more names for Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who infamously challenged Charlie Sykes to give him just one name of someone who committed vote fraud in Milwaukee.
  • Michelle Malkin delivers the Beijing Repression Olympics update of the day – the results of one of the 78 protest applications filed. No word on whether it was one of the 74 that had been “voluntarily withdrawn”, one of the 3 where a revision was requested, or the 1 that was rejected outright.   • Speaking of Olympics (which I’m not watching), Little Miss Sunshine cheers the gold-medal-winning womens’ beach volleyball team of Kerri Walsh and Misty May for praising President Bush after winning the gold. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Punished by a Baby (part 2.5)

In case you missed Shoebox’s post below, go read it. There is an expansion or two based on what Ed Morrissey found, including a confirmation of the veracity of the YouTubed conversation Shoebox and Erick Erickson embedded:

Guy Benson not only tracked down the audio to the Chicago Tribune, but he came up with this little gem from the transcripts of the Illinois Legislature (specifically, pages 32-34, from the 4/22/2002 session):

[T]he only plausible rationale, to my mind, for this legislation would be if you had a suspicion that a doctor, the attending physician, who has made the assessment that this is a nonviable fetus and that, let’s say for the purposes of the mother’s health, is being "” that "” that labor is being induced, that that physician (a) is going to make the wrong assessment and (b) if the physician discovered, after the labor had been induced, that, in fact, he made an error, and in fact this was not a nonviable fetus but, in fact, a live child, that the physician, of his own accord or her own accord, would not try to exercise the sort of medical procedures and practices that would be involved in saving that child.

Now, if "” if you think that there are possibilities that doctors would not do that, then maybe this bill makes sense, but I "” I suspect and my impression is, is that the Medical Society suspects that doctors feel that they would already be under that obligation, that they would already be making these determinations, and that essentially adding a "” an additional doctor who the has to be called in an emergency situation to come in and make these assessments is really designed simply to burden the original decision of the woman and the physician to induce labor and perform an abortion.

Now, if that’s the case –and "” and I know some of us feel very strongly one way or the other on that issue "” that’s fine, but I think it’s important to understand that this issue ultimately is about abortion and not live births. Because if these children are being born alive, I, at least, have confidence that a doctor who is in that room is going to make sure they’re looked after.

Ed goes on to point out that the above statement came after it was revealed that the doctors at the mis-named Christ Hospital were allowing babies born alive during abortion procedures to die without any care.

No Embryos For Blood!

The Times of London reports a group of researchers in Massachusetts have finally found a use for embryonic stem cells – the “mass-production” of red blood cells. Yes, it’s actually useful:

– It eliminates the threat of bloodborne diseases for those that require only red blood cells versus whole blood or plasma.
– Depending on just how many cells are produced per embryo (not noted in the story), it could make economic sense.
– Adult red blood cells do not have nucleii, and thus do not carry the genetic material that typically goes haywire to cause cancer, and this procedure currently yields 66% adult blood cells.

Before you death-cultists start yipping that this is solely an embryonic stem cell breakthrough, do note that this technique has not been tried with adult stem cells.

  • Let’s start with the McCainiac Watch today and something that is only semi-serious – Plebian has the results of the Intertubes conservatives’ VP wish list (or at least the Morons’ wish list). Item #8 looks like a good qualification. Did I mention that plebian’s middle name is “Surely”?
  • Rob Bluey isn’t counting out Eric Cantor. Whether he, or any other Congressional darkhorse, remains in play depends on who Barack Obama picks; if he goes with a governor, there’s no way John McCain could or should go with another Congresscritter, especially considering the historic low approval rating of Congress.
  • McCain/Loserman, Part 1 – Carol Platt Liebau thinks it’s brilliant strategery to keep Joe Lieberman in the mix. It’s more like stragedy; while I can’t speak for anybody else, I won’t be fooled into thinking McCain’s choice is more conservative just because he considered picking somebody who still caucuses with the ‘Rats in the Senate.
  • McCain/Loserman, Part 2 – Patrick Ruffini won’t be too upset if it is Lieberman. Thus is the difference between Washington Insider and somebody far away from the DC bubble (Sean Hackbarth’s description of me) made crystal-clear. It’s more like punting long on 3rd down.
  • McCain/Loserman, Part 3 – Michelle Malkin asks whether we could vote for a McCain/Lieberman ticket. I seem to have missed the “I’ll be writing in the boss and see-dubya” option.
  • McCain/Loserman, Part 4 – Ed Morrissey sums it up in one word – DISASTER. Actually, there’s a lot more words worth reading, including a suggestion if McCain really wants to blow up the GOP without blowing out all the conservatives.
  • Erick Erickson asks where the stories about a pro-abortion VP for McCain are coming from. While I took door #5 (the closest thing to the “R”NC that is out there), a shocking number of people made the McCain campaign #2 with a bullet.
  • Sean Oxendine points out the good and bad about McCain’s chances – he’s only getting (most of) those that don’t like Obama.
  • Thomas Lifson found the Obamination campaign handing out “street money”. I honestly don’t know what the difference is between that and voter bribery, but it’s par for the ‘Rat course.
  • Bill Quick is shocked, SHOCKED that the University of Illinois-Chicago is refusing to release records relating to service Barack Obama did for Bill Ayers’ group. He’s also wondering why the TV trucks aren’t camped out there (actually, he knows why, but I won’t spoil the surprise by repeating it).

Drill Here, Drill Now Tuesdays – 8/19/2008

This idea was started by Jessi at Wake Up America. It will appear here every Tuesday (whether I’m here or not; the only difference is I won’t be able to update the current gas price while on vacation) until Congress wakes up and allows a lot more domestic drilling (I’m not talking about just ANWR, or just off the Florida coast where Cuba, Red China and Brazil are preparing to drink our milkshake, or just the shale fields in the Rockies).

My Gas Price (south suburban Milwaukee County, Wisconsin): $3.829 (same station as 2 weeks ago, only they gave up on the cash discount)

America needs to drill here drill now. America is having a energy crisis, and we need to do something now!

Urge Congress to pass a bill to drill in America, where the United States has vast oil and gas resources onshore and offshore that are currently illegal to develop and therefore inaccessible.

U.S. law prohibits the development of approximately 38 billion barrels of undeveloped oil resources (19 billion barrels onshore and 18.92 billion offshore).

U.S. law prohibits the development of approximately 180 trillion cubic feet of undeveloped natural gas resources (94.5 trillion cubic feet onshore and 85.7 trillion cubic feet offshore).

CONGRESS RECENTLY VOTED TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO DEVELOP U.S. OIL SHALE RESOURCES

With oil prices at an all-time high, Americans are facing escalating gas, diesel, and aircraft fuel increases. Oil prices are projected to increase further.

Congress, however, has made it illegal to develop vast domestic oil resources in large parts of the United States.

The most startling Congressional prohibition on domestic oil production concerns the recently enacted ban on the development of oil shale resources in parts of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming in the Green River Formation. According to a Rand Study estimate, this reserve contains over one trillion barrels of oil, with 800 billion barrels fully recoverable, or three times the current oil reserves as Saudi Arabia.

If you haven’t already done so, first sign the petition to call for more drilling, then sign the one to get Congress back to DC so they can allow more drilling faster.

McCain to announce VP pick on the 29th

Politico is reporting that John McCain will give himself a birthday present and announce his VP nominee in Ohio one day after Barack Obama (probably) takes his victory lap around Invesco Field.

Given they’re talking about Tim Pawlenty and Mitt Romney as the “conservative” choices, I’m not very hopeful that the proper timing won’t prove to be the entirety of the “one step forward” half of the “one step forward/one step back” nature of the McCain campaign.

DNS fix for RoadRunner Wisconsin customers

Over the last few days, I haven’t been able to access certain sites, such as Sheboygan Shenanigans and the #dontgo Twitter feed. What those sites have in common are domain servers from domaincontrol.com (specifically the NS47 and NS48 servers). The default RoadRunnerWI DNS servers lost connectivity with them sometime on July 31.

After a pair of web chat sessions, and a lengthy phone call with customer service, I finally got a fix from RR. If you are unable to access those sites (or others that have domain servers on ns47.domaincontrol.com/ns48.domaincontrol.com), you need to change your DNS servers manually to the following:

Primary – 4.2.2.2
Secondary – 4.2.2.3

Hopefully RoadRunner will have a more-permanent fix for their default DNS servers soon, now that they know something is hosed with them.

I have to thank silent E for finally waking me up out of my stupor; until he posted the early edition of this morning’s Scramble, I had assumed that Jeni’s site simply went dark.

And here comes the flop on Obama and drilling

Remember when Barack Obama said he would support the “Gang of 10″‘s plan to potentially open up drilling off of the coasts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia? CNN reports the clock has just struck midnight on that statement:

“I made a general point about the fact that we need to provide the American people some relief and that there has been constructive conversations between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate on this issue,” he said during a press conference in Cape Canaveral.

“What I will not do, and this has always been my position, is to support a plan that suggests this drilling is the answer to our energy problems,” Obama added….

Just in case you don’t think this is a full flip-flop, CNN also included some previous comments on offshore drilling in the story:

“When I’m president, I intend to keep in place the moratorium here in Florida and around the country that prevents oil companies from drilling off Florida’s coasts,” Obama told reporters in Jacksonville in late June. “That’s how we can protect our coastline and still make the investments that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and bring down gas prices for good.”

As the vacationing Jim Geraghty says, “All statements by Barack Obama come with an expiration date. All of them.”

Revisions/extensions (7:20 pm 8/2/2008) – I added some explanation to prove that it is a full flip-flop from Obama. I wonder what the Obamination Express runs on; I sure hope it isn’t a petrochemical, because it sure seems to be doing a lot of u-turns and back-ups.

Big Trouble In Little Blogger

If the IE problems exposed by Sitemeter weren’t enough, Blogger is once again having a major malfunction. Over the last couple days, many blogs, from Badger Blog Alliance to Folkbum’s Rambles and Rants, have suffered the wrath of an out-of-control Blogger, and their members have been blocked by Google from putting up new posts as they have been dumped into the Google/Blogger “splog” file.

At first, I thought this was an extension of the war against the PUMAs that happened the other week, mainly because my feed reader is highly right-centric (self-preservation is an honorable goal, after all), and the that’s where I noted the problems. However, the reports are starting to come in that the left end of the blogosphere is also being heavily-affected. Once again, a technology I left behind (more or less; The Bar is still a Blogger/Sitemeter place) has demonstrated an Epic FAIL.

Hopefully everybody will get the splog lock lifted quickly.
