Yes, Week 1 was weak as usual

Washington 7 @ NY Giants 16 (-4.5) – That’s how to start the season. Time to break out the old pre-Alvarez Badger chant – I WON FIRST!
Cincinnati 10 (-2) @ Baltimore 17 – Also not recommended; QBs with broken noses.
NY Jets 20 (-3) @ Miami 14 – Please welcome your division-leading New York Bretts.
Kansas City 10 @ New England 17 (-17-LOSS) – Welcome to Super Loser Curse, Brady.
Houston 17 (+6.5) @ Pittsburgh 38 – Ow; my knee! I’m sending the bill to Gary Kubiak for being stupid and having no defense.
Jacksonville 10 (-3) @ Tennesse 17 – Yep; it’s hurting a lot. At least Guido’s working over the same knees Knock-Knees Tony did for the playoffs.
Detroit 21 (-3) @ Atlanta 34 – How bad are Duh Lions? Fox announcers are already calling for heads to roll. At least I got the over right to salvage a split.
Seattle 10 (+1) @ Buffalo 34 – The Seahags looked like The Walrus retired a year early.
Tampa Bay 20 @ New Orleans 24 (-3.5) – It’s all about the turnovers creating emotion.
St. Louis 3 (+7.5) @ Philadelphia 38 – Mental note; see if the Eagles’ defense is still available in my fantasy leagues.
Dallas 28 (-6) @ Cleveland 10 – Wiggy and Owen are quite happy with this result.
Carolina 26 (+9) @ San Diego 24 – I had the right state for the barking dog, just the wrong town.
Arizona 23 @ San Francisco 13 (+2.5) – Turnovers kill.
Chicago 29 @ Indianapolis 13 (-10) – Yep; it was over at halftime. Only thing is, that Bears’ D still has bite.
Minnesota 19 (+2) @ Green Bay 24 – At least I told you to not take the Aaron Rodgers Won’t Make It Through Game 1 prop bet.
Denver 41 (-3) @ Oakland 14 – How bad was this week? I whiffed on the JaMarcus Russel INT total.

  • Heather Radish found backlash against the LeftStreamMedia in Cedarburg Friday. It was long overdue.
  • Lawhawk found the Gorebal “Warming” acolytes advocating mandating their vegan diet on everybody.
  • Owen delivers the two-letter answer. Since this is a Moronblog, I need to append an expletive on that – HELL NO!
  • Dad29 delivers a message to the captain of the HMS Goretanic.
  • Ace broke out the ever-funny headline for the now-reported likely death of Grade A Traitor Islamokazi Adam Gadahn. Since it’s Ace, and we Morons are in full attendance at the wake party, do use discretion on joining in (i.e. make sure the boss joins in as well).
  • Bull Dog Pundit sounds the bail-out alarm for the Big 3 automakers. We did bail out Chrysler once already.
  • Eddiebear discovered a potential new drink of the Moronosphere – bacon-flavored vodka.

Fortunately, Fred has a reason to not be so glum about tomorrow (at least if the Packers’ D and Darren McFadden come through for me and Greg Jennings doesn’t for him).

McCain, Obama to jointly visit Ground Zero 9/11

The Wall Street Journal’s Washington Wire reports that Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama, the Republican and Democratic Presidential nominees (respectively), will be making a joint visit to the World Trade Center site on September 11. They issued a historic joint statement regarding that:

On September 11, 2008, we will join together to mark the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks at Ground Zero.

All of us came together on 9/11 — not as Democrats or Republicans — but as Americans. In smoke-filled corridors and on the steps of the Capitol; at blood banks and at vigils — we were united as one American family. On Thursday, we will put aside politics and come together to renew that unity, to honor the memory of each and every American who died, and to grieve with the families and friends who lost loved ones. We will also give thanks for the firefighters, police, and emergency responders who set a heroic example of selfless service, and for the men and women who serve today in defense of the freedom and security that came under attack in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Since I managed to off Knock-Knees Tony after a disastrous post-season, I’m back for another season of fun and mayhem to defend my 123-120-13 regular-season record ATS and 20-13-1 performance on the over/unders. As always, the lines are provided by our friends at Bodog, the team I’m taking will have the line next to it, and I will disavow any knowledge of you should you use these picks (especially my 2-a-week over/unders).

Washington @ NY Giants (-4.5) – Jim Zorn has a better chance against the G-Men than Jason Campbell.
Cincinnati (-2) @ Baltimore – Rookie QBs are not recommended.
NY Jets (-3) @ Miami – Dare I say it? DARE I SAY IT? Not yet.
Kansas City @ New England (-17; currently off Bodog’s board) – Welcome to Mismatch Central. Don’t worry about the “injured” right foot on Brady.
Houston (+6.5) @ Pittsburgh – Let there be HITS! Take the under-43 to give The Man a feel for this game.
Jacksonville (-3) @ Tennesse – This won’t hurt a bit; it’s going to hurt a lot.
Detroit (-3) @ Atlanta – If you’re looking for defense, this isn’t the game for you. I know we have another rookie QB, but take the over-41 in the Mistake of the Week™.

NFL Predictions (WSB edition)

Asok opened up the season prediction pool over at The Wisconsin Sports Bar. Since I still have a key there, I’ll repost my no-study predictions for the season here:

Minnesota (Good – Adrian Peterson is enough in this division. Bad – If an opposing team can figure out how to tackle AP, the Vikes are done. Record – 9-7)
Chicago (Good – They still have a special special team, and the aging defense should have a few stops left in them. Bad – That defense is aged, and the disappearance of Brett Favre from the division won’t mean they’ll go through fewer QBs than Green Bay. Record – 7-9)
Green Bay (Good – As long as injuries and tall physical receivers don’t hit the defense, they’ll be able to stop people. Bad – There will be 8 people crowding the offensive line almost every down, and the departure of Favre means they’ll be going through as many QBs as the Bears. Record – 5-11)
Detroit – (Good – I honestly can’t think of any. Bad – They’re still run by Matt Millen. Record – 3-13)

Drill Here, Drill Now Tuesdays – 9/2/2008

It will appear here every Tuesday (whether I’m here or not; the only difference is I won’t be able to update the current gas price while on vacation) until Congress wakes up and allows a lot more domestic drilling (I’m not talking about just ANWR, or just off the Florida coast where Cuba, Red China and Brazil are preparing to drink our milkshake, or just the shale fields in the Rockies).

My Gas Price (south suburban Milwaukee County, Wisconsin): $3.759/gallon

America needs to drill here drill now. America is having a energy crisis, and we need to do something now!

Urge Congress to pass a bill to drill in America, where the United States has vast oil and gas resources onshore and offshore that are currently illegal to develop and therefore inaccessible.

U.S. law prohibits the development of approximately 38 billion barrels of undeveloped oil resources (19 billion barrels onshore and 18.92 billion offshore).

U.S. law prohibits the development of approximately 180 trillion cubic feet of undeveloped natural gas resources (94.5 trillion cubic feet onshore and 85.7 trillion cubic feet offshore).

CONGRESS RECENTLY VOTED TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO DEVELOP U.S. OIL SHALE RESOURCES

With oil prices at an all-time high, Americans are facing escalating gas, diesel, and aircraft fuel increases. Oil prices are projected to increase further.

Congress, however, has made it illegal to develop vast domestic oil resources in large parts of the United States.

The most startling Congressional prohibition on domestic oil production concerns the recently enacted ban on the development of oil shale resources in parts of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming in the Green River Formation. According to a Rand Study estimate, this reserve contains over one trillion barrels of oil, with 800 billion barrels fully recoverable, or three times the current oil reserves as Saudi Arabia.

If you haven’t already done so, first sign the petition to call for more drilling, then sign the one to get Congress back to DC so they can allow more drilling faster. Yes, Congress is back next week, but if my memory hasn’t failed me, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) plans on not allowing a clean vote on drilling.

  • Fred Keller brings back the drive-in. I fondly remember the days of riding into (and later driving into) the 41 Twin (later 41 Twins) before Northwestern Mutual bought the land and started moving their operations out of Milwaukee and into Franklin.
  • Larry Sandler found a new destination for Eggs On The Road – Marquette University for a debate on transit between Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barret scheduled for 9/9.
  • I’ll close out with a story of what a real leader does – Matt Burden relays the previously-untold story of what happened at Eielson Air Force Base when Air Force One made a refueling stop. It’s times like that where I am proud to call George W. Bush my President.

It’s been too long since I fired up Cover It Live, so I may as well fire it up for the acceptance speech coronation of Barack Hussein Obama II as the Democratic Presidential nominee. The fun will kick off at about 7:45 pm. Since this will almost certainly contain a lot of expletives, it will not be simulcast over at my corner hole in TownHall’s wall.

Housekeeping

A couple of items:

– First, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve changed the embed code for Day by Day. For some odd and untraceable reason, a few people have been having problems with the mouseover JavaScript, so I switched to the standard iframe embed. As a bonus, it now displays the most-current strip instead of attempting to display the current day’s strip (which doesn’t exactly work when there is no “current day” strip).
– Those of you who put Akismet 2.1.7 on your blogs have probably noticed that you can’t delete spam. The folks at Automattic have released 2.1.8 to fix that, but for some reason that release isn’t triggering the “auto-discovery” feature in the newer WordPress builds. Until that happens, you can head to the WordPress Akismet plugin page to grab the ZIP file, unzip it, and upload the contents to the appropriate folder (…/wp-content/plugins/akismet).

Sensenbrenner-Burkee debate – audio

Nick Schweitzer has a good summary up of the debate in Germantown tonight between Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner and Dr. Jim Burkee for the Republican nomination (and, because there are no other candidates in any other parties, the actual seat) in the 5th Congressional District. Yes, he was there with his laptop, and he was typing furiously throughout the debate. Wisconsin Eye was also there, so they should have video up in the near-future and they have video and audio.

My contribution, at least at this point, is an audio recording of the debate. I’m too tired to give a detailed analysis right now, but I do want to say a couple things:

– I would much rather see a challenge to Tom Petri than either Sensenbrenner or Paul Ryan, especially since much of Burkee’s platform is fiscal responsibility.
– Jim Burkee would be a good person to either do that challenge or compete for an open seat. No, he wouldn’t be perfect, and depending on the other persons, I may not support him.

Revisons/extensions (4:15 pm 8/28/2008) – First off; sorry about the incomplete post. I suffered the typical user error on that.

Next, Wisconsin Eye did get the video up (thanks for that and the link, P-Mac).

Wisconsin to go for Obama in November

Just after finding out that 22% of voter registrations/address changes since August 6 do not match up to drivers’ license records, the Government “Accountability” Board ruled that not only will those registrants be allowed to vote with no correction of the voter registration and no check of any ID, but that future mismatches will be ignored. A vote on a motion to require an at-poll ID check for those that don’t correct inconsistencies in voter registration failed on a 3-3 vote, while a vote on a motion to ignore future mismatches passed 5-1.

Everything has gone according to ‘Rat Governor Jim “Craps” Doyle’s (WEAC/Potawatomi-For Sale) plan, as he is the one who put all 6 members that board after the two bipartisan boards that preceded it, the State Elections Board and State Ethics Board, failed in his favor on various matters before them so egregiously that “something had to be done”.

Revisions/extensions (6:11 pm 8/27/2008) – My semi-sarcastic advice to Team McCain; abandon Wisconsin (except for La Crosse, which serves northeast Iowa) as this state is now as lost a cause as Illinois.

PUMAs crash and burn

The roll-call vote is up now, and Arkansas threw all of their votes to Barack Obama after Hillary Clinton released them at the last minute. So much for favorite daughter status.

No state thus far (through Delaware) has cast all the pledged delegates that Clinton had going into today for her, though DC did throw more votes her way than pledged delegates (it still was under the combined pledged/superdelegates total). Guess that pre-vote in the hotels worked wonders.

I hope the McCain campaign was paying attention to what Shoebox said this morning.

Revisions/extensions (5:43 pm 8/27/2008) – I honestly don’t know why California passed on its turn. The last Green Papers estimate of delegates, back in June, gave Clinton a 29-delegate lead (with 6 uncommitted) there, and Obama had a significant lead before California’s turn came up.

Now the yield game is going on. New Mexico to Illinois to New York.

R&E part 2 (5:49 pm 8/27/2008) – One last knife-twist into the heart of the PUMAs delivered by the cackling Clinton, as she calls for “One Vision, One Purpose” and Obama by acclimation as only Anton Slavik can. No dissent allowed.

Eggs on the road – the next couple weeks
