SurveyUSA released a poll last week that surveyed nationally, the public’s sense of the current economic situation.
Amongst the survey findings:
Only 9% believe the current economy is strong.
70% believe there could be a run on the banks (the survey was taken 2 days after the Bear Stearns arrangement)
While 46% have worries about losing their home and 81% have some worry about the ability to pay their bills, 56% believe the Federal government should not get involved in bailing out home mortgages.
They took a favorable/unfavorable poll on Alan Greenspan and Ben Brenanke. Greenspan had a favorable/unfavorable of 26%/15%, Brenanke 7%/14% (I wish they would have asked if people even knew who they are/were.)
But here’s the one that made me go Huh?
When asked whether they or anyone in the immediate family were looking for work but unable to find a job, the answer “YES” was given 38% of the time.
Huh? The national unemployment rate in February was 4.8% but 38% said they, or someone in their immediate family couldn’t find work. What’s up with the other 33%?
I suppose the other 33% could be people looking to “change” jobs but have been unable to find a new opportunity. If so, then the question was poorly worded. You just know someone is out there with this survey in their fact book waiting to pounce in say…..Michigan or some other third world economy within the United States, with the survey fact that “38% of Americans surveyed can’t, or know someone who is unable to get a job!” no context, no explanation just pandering.
The only other explanation I could find was also in the Survey. When asked whether they were concerned about losing their jobs, 30% of Democrats said they were “A lot” concerned. With Democrats over represented in government jobs, maybe these are government folks who see the anger that has mounted in places like Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and other places that have seen Democrats do stupid things with taxes and spending or people who see the “Straight Talk Express” pulling into DC’s Union Station and are looking to move off of the government dole before they are voted, or shrunk out?
I’m just exercising my Audacity of Hope.
