To steal a style from Glenn Beck:
What you need to know:
Barack Obama’s implosion over Jeremiah Wright has guaranteed that the Democratic ticket will include both Barack and Hillary.
How I got there:
- Barack Obama has been seriously damaged by the Wright controversy. A web survey (I told you there were black helicopters involved!) said that 52% of Democrats, 71% of Republicans and 54% of Independents would be less likely to support Obama following the revelation of the Wright videos. The Republican change is understandable but it’s pretty tough to win an election win you’ve damaged 52% of the home team and 54% of the folks who will ultimately decide whether you get to call “dibs” on the bedroom in Airforce One!
- This isn’t going to be the last ding on Obama. In case you missed it, Obama has changed the amount he’s received from Rezko at least, three different times. Not surprisingly, each time the number has been revised up! With the Rezko trial just getting started, I won’t be surprised if there are additionally “questions” raised by some of the testimony. now that Obama has shown the ability to use facts liberally, it won’t even matter whether substantive questions get raised, minor issues will keep his campaign in spin control mode.
- Unless something changes dramatically for Obama, he walks into the national convention wounded but with the most delegates and states won. As we’ve known for a while, the Super Delegates will decide the Democratic nominee.
- Contrary to what the Democrats want to tell you, it doesn’t really matter to the DNC who the primary voters want. “Mandates” or ideology mean nothing. The only criteria for their nominee will be the ability to beat the Republican.
- The DNC will determine that wounded, Obama can’t win. However, with the delegate and state win, along with the polarized support of African Americans, they can’t just throw Obama to the curb.
- The DNC will tell Obama that his choice is VP or not at all. Obama will see the polls showing the problems. The DNC will tell him that if he does this, they will get behind him for President when it is his “turn”. He’s relatively young so sitting for 8 years is no big deal. If he runs and loses, he’s toast for ever trying again and will become a lifelong Senator and pariah in the Democratic party…has anyone heard from John, I’m a Vietnam war vet, Kerry lately?
- The DNC will tell Hillary she has to take Obama. This one is a bit more obvious. Without Obama, Hillary knows that the African American vote will sit out ’08 or vote McCain or Nader. In either event, Hillary can’t win without the African American vote and they don’t vote if Obama isn’t on the ticket.
I suppose there’s a possibility that Barack could regain his mojo by August. However, that may require more belief in change than the American voter can ever HOPE to believe in.
Allow me to be the first to say, “Oh fuck!”
Revising and extending my remarks some (fortunately, I can do that even after the 15-minute mark), I believe things are too caustic for the acutal Nightmare Ticket. However, that would not preclude another black from being Clinton’s VP. He (or she) would not quite have the charisma of Obama, and the Wright problem would be a bit more apparent.
