BlogWorld – Warning Order

by @ 22:20. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Uncle Jimbo gave Vegas fair warning. Don’t think I qualify as depraved (actually, I’m glad I don’t), but I’m definitely a maurauder.

Even though the Bar didn’t make the finals of the 2007 Weblog Awards (reminder, vote the slate to your right), I’m headed to Vegas for BlogWorld.

Not only will I hopefully learn how to be a better blogger, I’ll make some bank in the sports books. In the meantime, I’ve got the guest-bloggers warmed up.

I feel a bit better about pim…er, promoting this because I don’t have a direct stake, but the job is far from done. If the NRE-recommended blogs are in the lead, pad the lead. If they’re not, make sure they get there.

Slight change in the Operation Exploitation lineup

by @ 13:46. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Blackfive reports that it seems that the oh-so-tolerant lieberals are going to try to do to the Best Military Blog category what they’re successfully done so far to the Funniest Blog, Best Blog and Best Comic Strip categories. Therefore, he’s recommending that, instead of making Blackfive a 3-time winner, that Michael Yon win this year’s award.

The good news is Mike still has a healthy lead. The bad is the script monkeys of the left are unusually-effective at wiping out healthy leads. Therefore, my last 4 votes will be going to Mike, and yours should be too. Don’t let the lieberal script monkeys win.

While I’m at it, I need to correct a major oversight in the roll.

Project Valour-IT update: Match time starting to become successful

by @ 12:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Time to follow up on Michelle Malkin’s and her readers’ challenge to the left-of-center half of the blogosphere (including me) Well, I guess upping the ante to $500 $550 $750 $800 $1,050 $1,550 is finally starting to pay off.

Thank you, Insanity (Team Army), Greg from the Left (adding the widget for Team Air Force would be appreciated), The Online Lunchpail (Team Navy/USCG), and Springbored’s Springboard (Team Navy/USCG), for stepping up to the plate.

There’s still $30 from my pocket and a heap from others’ pockets to be donated in the name of 6 more left-of-center blogs.

As a reminder, you don’t have to be left-of-center to start or continue helping Project Valour-IT. To join a team, head here to get started. To just donate, mash one of the team’s widgets over to your left. You can also go into the Project Valour-IT auctions and start bidding on items the teams have put up. The money goes to the team the person who donated the item designated.

Revisions/extensions (1:20 pm 11/5/2007) – Make that $25 left in my pool; Lawyers, Guns and Money stepped up for Team Navy/USCG. As a housekeeping item, I will finish settling up either on the morning of the 11th or when we get 5 more left-of-center blogs to answer the bell (part of that depends on where I am when they answer; I might be in a location where I do not trust security).

Revisions/extensions part 2 (3:27 pm 11/5/2007) – The latest info direct from FbL, head fundraiser, is over here.

Revisions/extensions part 3 (9:41 pm 11/6/2007) – Make that $20. F15mech reports below Balloon Juice hopped on board Team Army.

One more thing; Daylight Savings Time ended early this morning, so that means a couple things. First, if the time you voted was 12:30 pm, you’re more than likely to be able to vote at 11:30 am. Second, if you run a WordPress blog (either self-hosted or through WordPress.com), and you adjusted for DST, you need to re-adjust for Standard Time.

Project Valour-IT update: Match time

by @ 21:15. Filed under Miscellaneous.

I’m a bit lower on the economic scale than Michelle Malkin, but I can’t not help promote Project Valour-IT. Michelle has an open offer to donate $50 for each of the first 10 left-wing blogs that join one of the fundraising teams (Army/Navy-USCG/Air Force/Marines); I’ll kick in $5 for each of those 10. Just let Michelle know (I trust her record-keeping).

In case you haven’t noticed, those thermometers to your left are looking a little low. We need to get this thing going, so click on the team of your choice (the order as they are now are Army Green, Marine Brown, Air Force Gray and Navy Blue) and donate.

Thank you.

Revisions/extensions (2:45 am 11/4/2007) – Just so I’m clear; my donation will be divided as equally as possible among the 4 branches. Also, michellemalkin.com commenter swj719AWG also stepped up to the match plate, offering $5 per branch per left-wing blog ($20 total) for the first 10, and michellemalkin.com commenter SirKnob will kick in $5 to Team Navy/USCG per left-wing blog for the first 10.

Revisions/extensions part 2 (12:36 pm 11/4/2007) – Add trinitytim to the michellemalkin.com commenters jumping in, to the tune of $25 to Team Army for the first 10 left-wing blogs. So far, it’s been a whine-fest on the left side of the blogosphere.

Revisions/extensions part 3 (12:00 pm 11/5/2007) – This will be the last update here, as I’m moving this up to a new post (and as such, comments are closed here). The left-of-center blogs are finally starting to roll in per FbL. That was just after michellemalkin.com commenter F15mech decided to kick in $50 per left-of-center blog to Team Zoomies for the first 10. There goes my first $20; I’m looking for another 6 for the last $30.

Will run for beer

by @ 7:15. Filed under Miscellaneous.

(H/T – Michelle/HotAir Headlines)

The Daily Mail reports on a Granada University of Spain study that claims that quaffing a pint of beer after a good bit of exercise as part of one’s rehydration routine rehydrates one faster than just guzzling water.

Professor Manuel Garzon had a set of 25 student volunteers run on a treadmill in a room heated to 104 degrees until they were on the ragged edge of exhaustion. He and his staffers measured the participants’ hydration levels, ability to concentrate, and motor skills, then had half take in two half-pints of a Spanish lager before being allowed to drink as much water as they wanted, while the other half simply had to make do with as much water as they wanted.

Garzon said the rehydration effect in the students who were given beer was “slightly better” than among those given only water, and attributes that to the carbon dioxide quenching the thirst more quickly and the carbohydrates (presumably including the ethanol as that is a carb) replacing the calories expended.

They’re recommending a pint of beer a day for male athletes, and a shorty a day for female athletes. Prost!

Project Valour-IT

by @ 16:14. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Cartoon courtesy Cox and Forkum

I don’t have a dog in this fight, as the blogroll is full of people on all 4 teams, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t get some money in to this 4-way battle royale between the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Soldiers’ Angels Project Valour-IT, which helps provide voice-controlled and adaptive laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand wounds and other severe injuries at major military medical centers, is holding their annual fundraising competition, with many bloggers choosing between the 4 branches. This goes until Veterans’ Day, and your donations, regardless of which team you support, are tax-deductible as Soldiers’ Angels is a qualifying non-profit organization.

Since, unlike Blackfive, CDR Salamander, Michelle and Mary Katharine, I can’t choose just one, I’ll instead give you all 4 options. Choose one, choose some, choose all, but choose.

Revisions/extensions (10:40 am 10/30/2007) – Due to technical issues with ChipIt, the widgets have been replaced here, and will be very shortly on the sidebar.

Eggs on the road

by @ 0:05. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Partly because I need to put some more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but mostly because these are some good events, I’ll be at the following:

– Center-Right Coalition meeting 10/24/2007, 9 am, Madison Club (5 E Wilson St. in Madison) – Guest-speaker will be Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke.

Gathering of Eagles in Chicago, 1 pm, Federal Plaza (Dearborn and Adams in Chicago).

Be there or be somewhere, though I prefer you be there.

Insta-review of the second Florida Pubbie debate

by @ 21:53. Filed under Miscellaneous.

I’m too drunk to go through everybody else’s notes and give out grades tonight. I will say, looking back through just my notes, McCain won, and Giuliani and Thompson had strong debates. Romney, not so much. Paul-nut, as usual, took his performance right off the rails (did he take driving lessons from Swimmer and Patches Kennedy?), even when it appeared like he would finally get through a question without doing so. Huckabee, Tancredo and Hunter were essentially non-entities, though Huckabee was usually strong when he would actually get into the act.

One more thought before I crash, with all the focus on Hiliary, I have to say this was the HamNation Memorial Debate. Thank you, Katie, for snapping Mary Katharine out of her Edy’s and Cheeze-It stupor, and thank you, MK, for putting it on the web in time for the candiates not of Italian extraction to focus on it like a laser with six-string razors and mouths like alligators.

Make that a second thought and a hell of a regret as I dug up Quiet Riot’s “Bang Your Head (Metal Health)”; if only I had video editing software and a TV tuner on the computer, I could’ve punched out a Metal Health review of the debate.

Revisions/extensions (12:36 pm 10/13/2007) – She’s back home, still in good spirits, and still no real news on the long-term situation. That’s all I can really say about that.

Next, Ted Kennedy had a major scare yesterday, as doctors found and removed a major blockage in his left carotid artery (H/T – Jib). Get well soon, Senator.

Rush Limbaugh is auctioning off the letter sent from Dingy Harry Reid and 40 of his closest moonbat friends to the CEO of Clear Channel Communications. The proceeds will be going to The Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation, and the winning bid will receive the original letter, a Haliburton case being used to hold said letter, a letter of thanks from Rush, and a photo of Rush displaying the letter on stage in Philadelphia on October 11.

The auction closes October 19 at 8 am CDT, and the bid as of a few minutes ago was already at $6,600.

Grading the Republican debate #8

by @ 14:18. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Since I’m a day late with the gradebook, it’s a good thing a lot of people took notes, like Mary Katharine Ham (who did the debate in lolDebatez format) Matt Lewis, Vodkapundit, and Huckleberry Dumbell, to back up my own PG-13-rated notes (rated such for language).  Let’s break out the red pen and start grading both the candidates and the moderators:

Maria Bartiromo – B – She had the benefit of having Chris Matthews as the co-host, and most of her questions were decent economic ones.

Sam Brownback – B – The good: Flat tax, drill’em oil policy, no tax increases, focus on the family.  The bad: electric cars (batteries do not work too well at zero degrees and colder, and it’s not a Wisconsin or Michigan winter without a few sub-zero nights), lack of stage presence, like of Greenspan, flat tax plan “optional”.

Rudy Giuliani – B – The good: Once again laid the smackdown on Ron Paul (though I would’ve dipped back to 12/7 instead of 9/11), seems to have turned over a new leaf from his ’80s witchhunt of Wall Street, good stage presence, sense of history (he actually dipped back before 9/11 for once).  The bad: Wrong side of line-item veto (to be fair, I don’t want a President with Wisconsin’s Frankenstein veto), I still can’t get over his ’80s witchhunt of Wall Street.

John Harwood – I, leaning toward F – My semi-drunk notes (I would’ve been racing Vodkapundit, but I had to pace myself because of Drinking Right later last night) only show him asking 2 questions, but both started off with “Wah!”

Mike Huckabee – D+ – The good: He won’t wait for a public opinion poll if inbound nukes are on the way, faith in the American consumer.  The bad: Repeating the “end of underground economy” lie vis-a-vis the “Fair”Tax, predicting a union comeback, supporting corn-a-hole, willing to spend billions just to deny the ‘Rats a political win (and giving them the actual win instead).

Duncan Hunter – C – The good: Understands we’re in a trade war, and that the Pubbies need to be more “human”.  The bad: He’s turned into a one-note pony, blind support for the “Fair”Tax.

Chris Matthews – F – Once again, Prissy Chrissy proved the truth behind the ancient Egyptian fable of the scorpion and the horse.  It was at the 45-minute mark, right after the first set of commercials, he plunged his stinger into the debate.

John McCain – C- – The good: Once again the most-quoted by his opponents, against compuslory union membership, command of history, won’t make the mistake of McShame-Slimeroad Lieberal Protection Act with the Internet, earmark-hater  The bad: Big-government lover, way out of his league on economic issues, bad stumbler (and that doesn’t count the problems hearing a couple of questions), egotistical.

Ron Paul – F – The good (yes, there is a good here): dislike of subsidies.  The bad:  Utter stupidity with regard to foreign relations, brain-dead on history, latent goldbug, dislike of subsidies seems more pro-forma than an actual core belief.

Mitt Romney – B- – The good: “(S)moother than a smoothie smoothed over with fine-grit sandpaper” (shamelessly stolen from Vodkapundit), says most of the right things.  The bad:  The record doesn’t support the rhetoric, support for farm subsidies while also supporting corn-a-hole, support for HiliaryCare Lite (i.e. TaxachusettsCare).

Jeffrey Seib – B+ – Two of the three questions he posed were very good ones.  He got the corn-a-hole monster out on the table (promptly flubbed by both candidates it was posed to).

Tom Tancredo – C- – The good:  The only candidate to recognize that the 3,000-lb hippo in the government part of the economic room is SocSecurity and Medicare, and the 3,000-lb hippo in the trade half is imported oil, won’t raise taxes.  The bad:  Somehow ties everything back to illegal immigration (stretching too far sometimes), gratuitous cheap shot at Brownback’s mother (which knocked the grade down a full grade).

Fred Thompson – B – The good:  Avoided the Prissy Landmines with aplomb, said that unionizing ballots should remain secret ballots, generally got stronger as the debate went on.  The bad:  Slow start, fumbled the one “specifics” question from Bartiromo.
