Adding Fuel to the Fire

by @ 10:46. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Sorry for the pun…no, I guess I’m not.

I heard on Glenn Beck this morning that gas prices increased $.012/gallon every 30 days while the Republicans had control of congress.   Since Nancy and her gang have had control, gas increases $.076/gallon every 30 days.

HMMMMMMM Does Nancy have ties Exxon that we don’t know about?

Hillary and Barack continue to want to run against Bush in the election.   I suggest John McCain run against Nancy and the Democratic control of Congress.   If McCain had any real conservative balls, this would be the commercial he would be playing non stop between now and the election.

Nero Fiddles

by @ 7:19. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Wednesday morning, John Boehner along with other House Republican leaders, sent a letter to Nancy Pelosi asking her to make good on her 2006 promise  to have a  plan to reduce gas prices.   As Boehner pointed out, and all of us are feeling, gas prices are up over 50% since Pelosi took office.

This afternoon, Pelosi released her plan.   You can see the details here.

As I read it, Nancy thinks the following will reduce gas prices:

 • Filing lawsuits against OPEC acting as a Cartel….
 • Continuing to chase gouging Bogeymen…
 • Forcing renewable energy into the marketplace
 • Chasing more gouging Bogeymen….

Can anyone explain to me where one penny of reduction in gas prices will come from any of these “initiatives?”   If anything, the result of these acts will be to increase government regulation, raise costs on existing gas suppliers and force the use of uneconomical alternative energies.   The result will not be a reduction in gas prices, rather, it will be an overall increase in energy prices.

Nancy is proving to have the leadership traits of Nero.   The difference between Nero and Nancy is that Nero still had something to burn when he got done.

The Understatement of the Day

by @ 7:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

“It required the steadiest of hands.”

The doctor seems pretty cavalier about the whole thing.   However, he makes the mistaken comment that the “pin” was still in the grenade.   I wonder if his bravado would have come down a couple of notches if he knew that this kind of grenade has no pin.

Congratulations to the soldier and the doctor!

RIP Mr. Frick

by @ 7:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Mr. Frick, AKA Werner Groebli died Wednesday at the ripe old age of 92.

For those of you unfamiliar with Mr. Frick, he was a comedic ice skater and a staple of the Ice Follies for many years.

Mr. Frick’s signature move was the “spread-eagle cantilever.”   You can see it in the following clip, about 1:57

Watching the video I’m reminiscent of the great family television entertainment that was available during Mr. Frick’s era, I miss it.

God bless you Mr. Frick, thanks for sharing your talent.

A solution in search of a problem

by @ 7:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Is it just me or does it seem that the government spends more time trying to create problems than focusing on  the problems that are right in front of them?

In Saturday’s Star and Tribune the Minnesota Department of Health is raising a specter of lead poisoning from eating gun  shot venison.

I’ll admit to not being a deer hunter.   However, I’ve eaten my share of fowl shot with lead over the years.   Other than that third arm I have growing out of my back, I’ve seen no impact of a little lead in my diet…KIDDING!

Lead shot has a history going back to the mid 1500’s.   I did some Google searching and while information for the 1600’s and late 1500’s was a little difficult to parse (Darn, if only Al Gore had been born during the Dark Ages we would have had the internet so much earlier), I wasn’t able to find any epidemic of death certificates that listed “lead poisoning from venison ingestion” anywhere.

The MSM wails about how President Bush and the Republicans use “scare tactics” to motivate voters.   Apparently “scare” is perfectly acceptable to the MSM when they want to further their “man is a pariah on the planet” agenda.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a nicely baked pheasant awaiting my arrival.

Bon Appetite!

I’m confused

by @ 7:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

I know that isn’t a real surprise but this time I’m really confused…..

What’s the criteria Barack Obama would like to use to determine who we negotiate with?

In a statement today regarding Carter’s trip to visit Hamas, Barack was quoted as saying:

“We must not negotiate with a terrorist group intent on Israel’s destruction,”

However, just recently as a part of his questioning of General Patraeus, Barack reiterated his desire to negotiate with Iran:

“We should be talking to them (Iran)  as well,” Obama told the top US General in Iraq David Petraeus and US ambassador to Baghdad Ryan Crocker.

I may have missed a recent news flash but isn’t Iran a country that is intent on Israel’s destruction?

Israel “is an illegitimate regime, there is no legal basis for its existence,”  Ahmadinejad said.

I guess the criteria for Barack comes down to who the audience is at the moment. OK, I get it now.

Disney

by @ 7:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Mrs. Shoebox, the little Boxes and I made a trip to the Florida House of Mouse last week.   While going through the parks I realized that there are a lot of things at Disney that make for easy object lessons in life.   Here are a few of the things that I picked up during our trip.

 1. Economics:   If you’ve got a product that someone really wants, you can name the price.   If you have a product that someone really wants and you can restrict their ability to get it elsewhere, you can name a ridiculous price.   Ponchos that cost about the same as a large hefty bag…say $.07 each, when  sold outside of a “you will get very wet” raft ride, go for $7.50.
 2. If you have a group of geese, they are a gaggle, cows are a herd, whales are a pod, a group of photographers gathered at the entrance to a park are called a nuisance.
 3. All a guy needs to know about relationships with females can be summed up by one line from Mary Poppins.   When asked to explain a particular commotion, Mary responded with “I never explain anything.”   That was the answer Mr. Banks received and it is THE answer as a male, that you should be satisfied with as well.
 4. A few years back, Disney instituted the Fastpass system.   With this system you can go to some of their more popular attractions, insert your entrance ticket and get a pass that will allow you to skip to the head of the line for that particular attraction at a  set time.     There are a number of rules around how the passes work so that you may be able to get 3 or so on any given day and then stand in the regular queues for the other attractions.   Here’s my object lesson:  in life you may get the occasional Fastpass.   It may come in the form of a scholarship, a particular job promotion, a great spouse  or some other plus.   Just like at Disney, life’s Fastpass will let you move ahead of your peers for a period of time.   However, also like Disney, you won’t get a Fastpass for every obstacle in your life.   Fastpasses should be looked at and used as a perk, novelty, gift.   Fastpasses are great and should be relished  but  we’re going to spend most of our lives standing in line with everyone else and that’s what life is mostly about.
 5. Recession:   Yes there are issues in the economy and I do believe that many people’s “wealth” has been taken down a few notches due to lowered housing equity and stock markets.   However, as I wandered through the Mouse’s kingdoms last week, you would never know that the word “recession” was contemplated by anyone.   The place was packed!   I can also tell you that it wasn’t just the “rich.”   If you want to see a cross section of America, spend sometime at the home of the Mouse.   Rich, poor, young, old, black, white, single, large families…you see it all at the Mouse and amazingly, we all enjoy the same things….maybe for different reasons but we enjoy the same things.   Which leads me to:
 6. Civility:   When visiting the Mouse, with rare exception, people are pleasant, helpful, polite and caring.   People who have never met and will never meet again will help get a stroller loaded on a bus (I’m not talking about the paid help), return a dropped item, give up a seat on the bus, make way for a small child to get a front row seat for a parade.   If we could somehow package the civility that occurs on the Mouse’s turf and spread it everywhere we’d have a much better chance of talking through challenging issues.

Music to kill zombies by

by @ 7:21. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Boy do I miss a lot when I take a weekend off, but the allergies were just slaying me. Since Elliot picked this up from Rustemeister’s Alehouse, who got it from SayUncle and Armed Canadian, and because doubleplusundead and See-Dubya didn’t pick it up yet, I may as well play along. Songs I kill zombies by:

– I warm up to “Gone Shootin'” by AC/DC because it just isn’t healthy to limit oneself to bladed weapons against a horde.
– When it’s time to get up close and personal, “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath provides the shotgun beat.
– If all that’s standing between certain doom and me is my minigun, it’s time to break out “Four Horsemen” by Metallica.

And if I don’t want lyrics, it’s Doom and Doom II songs by Robert Prince.

(H/T – Kate, who is a bit too self-depreciating)

As a red-blooded male, all ll I have to say to this is, “Amen, and with brains to match.”:

Women on the political right are the best looking, conservative opposition leader and election frontrunner Silvio Berlusconi said on an Italian radio show.

“The women of the right are certainly the most beautiful,” Berlusconi said on Radio Anch’io public radio, quoted Wednesday by Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Let’s see; Mary Katharine Ham, Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham, Phel, Amanda Carpenter, Sister Toldjah, Jenna,…. I could go on (and on and on and on), but you get the picture. Speaking of that, I don’t need the bots stopping in on a year-old post, so you get to do your own picture-mining.

Obama and Patriotism

by @ 7:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Obama seeks to affirm his patriotism

That’s the headline from this article  by the AP, that talks about how Barack has been inserting more patriotic statements in his recent speeches.

The article quotes the following as his “patriotic” statements:

I love this country not because it’s perfect but because we’ve always been able to move it closer to perfection,” he told an audience in North Dakota.

And in Montana: “It’s a country where … I’ve seen ordinary Americans find justice, where I’ve seen progress made for working families who need leaders who are willing to stand up and fight for them. That is the country I love.”

But are these really patriotic statements?

I’ll concede that these statements are factually accurate, but they don’t seem patriotic to me. They strike me as more of the “yeah but” kinds of statements that Barack uses when he tries to deal with an issue without making himself look like the leftist he is.

“…move it closer to perfection,” I wonder where on the perfection scale Barack thinks we are? By his statement I assume he thinks we’re at least at 1 but not at 100, but where between 1 and 100 are we? Factually, I would agree with Barack that we are not at 100 for the simple reason that much of the country still views abortion as a valid birth control method, but I digress….See, if Barack wanted this to be a patriotic statement he would have said something like,

“I love this country because it’s the best system in the world. While we may not be perfect, we have a process that allows us to make constant, peaceful strides to that end.”

You may say I’m playing with semantics and that’s true. However, wasn’t it Barack who kept talking about the importance of “just words?” Words and how you choose to use them say alot about the intent of the speaker.   Making a beginning declarative statement rather than starting by trying to establish equivalency, would have made this patriotic, putting it together as he did makes it “yeah but.”

“I’ve seen ordinary Americans find justice,”   Is Barack suggesting that it is unusual for “ordinary” Americans to find justice?   Is he suggesting that only the wealthy or well connected can be assured of justice in our country?   Again, start with a declarative statement,

“I love this country because we have the best justice system in the world, a system where regardless of your economic or social standing, you can expect justice to serve you.   And in those few instances where the system doesn’t work as it should, I’m proud that there are leaders who will step up and fight to correct injustice.”

Once last comment on “just words” and the Obama supporters who will tell me that I’m twisting his language.   These comments came not from off-the-cuff remarks.   These comments came from prepared speeches.   Off-the-cuff remarks like “I don’t want them to be punished by a baby,” show me the individual’s true heart on a topic as they haven’t had time to think through the words and craft them.   Statements may be mad in  factual error but when it comes to judgements,  they speak with their most prevalent thought on the topic.   However,  with  prepared remarks, words that are considered and crafted in a particular order, well, you don’t get the chance to say “but he really meant XXXXXX.”   See, if he had really meant “XXXXXX,” he would have  crafted “XXXXXX.”   Barack purposely chose not to use declarative, patriotic statements simply because he will not declare his patriotism.   How tough is it?

Barack tried to distance himself from Jeremiah Wright’s hateful speech by saying he didn’t agree with it and then quickly added a “yeah but” by telling us that Wright had come out of a generation where this speech was acceptable and we needed to appreciate that.   Now Barack’s trying to tell us he’s patriotic, and it seems to me that he’s also trying to tell us that people are “patriotic” even if they don’t believe the US is the best country in the world.

A bit more respect for Bernanke

by @ 7:05. Filed under Miscellaneous.

I have to admit, I was no fan of Bernanke. He appeared to have an ability, in his Congressional testimonies, to say things that caused unnecessary market gyrations. He  looked to be very late to the game in reacting to the subprime turmoil. He  seemed to me to be one of those guys who was probably very book smart but just didn’t have the business common sense to be a successful leader of the Fed.

I may have been wrong.

I’ve written about Bernanke and the Bear Stearns take out. While I’m still holding onto some healthy skepticism, each day that passes  in which  we don’t see another financial shoe drop, causes me to believe that that single transaction was a master stroke and saved the US a really awful experience of financial meltdown. there’s been a lot of consternation and wailing over this transaction, complaining that the Fed didn’t have the authority to do what they did because Bear Sterns wasn’t a bank. Again, I’ve written on that, and while I agree with the concern of the issue, I believed at the time, and Bernanke has stated in his recent testimony to Congress, that he felt it necessary to act on Bear Sterns to save the broader financial system.

Are you happy to see me or is that a guitar in your pants?

by @ 7:00. Filed under Miscellaneous.

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) – Police are searching for a man accused of shoving an electric guitar in his and walking out of a store in Lewiston, Maine. Police say the theft occurred last week and they’re looking for three men. One of the men shoved a Fender Stratocaster in his pants and pulled a sweatshirt over the top. The other two acted as lookouts. All three can be seen on footage from video surveillance.Strangely enough, the music store has seen the method before. A man did the same thing in 2006 but was caught as he tried to walk out.

I would love to see the video. Either the description of “in his pants” is overly generous or this guy has some really odd pants.

I wonder if they would pay mileage?

The son of a retired widower has placed an advertisement looking for someone to have a few drinks with his father at a local pub for seven pounds (nine euros, 14 dollars) an hour.Jack Hammond, 88, and his son, Michael, will begin interviewing candidates for the position soon, after Michael posted the advertisement at their local post office in Hampshire, southern EnglandThe elder Hammond used to go to his local pub four times a week in Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire, with his neighbour, but had to stop the practice recently when he moved into a nursing home closer to the rest of his family.

“When you put an advertisement in a post office for 25p you don’t expect anything to come of it, so the response has been amazing,” Michael, a chef, said.

They have ruled out hiring a woman, as Michael Hammond said his father, a retired electrical engineer, would be uncomfortable having a drink with a woman he did not know, and are hoping to find “a gentleman who is not too bombastic and enjoys a nice pint” with an interest in engineering or golf.

“Dad will be going out with some of the candidates next week but we are going to do it properly, as he is vulnerable,” Michael added.

“It’s got to be the best job in the world.”

Punished by a baby

by @ 11:30. Filed under Miscellaneous.

At a townhall meeting in Johnstown, PA yesterday, Barck Obama made the following statement:

“When it comes specifically to HIV/AIDS, the most important prevention is education, which should include — which should include abstinence education and teaching the children — teaching children, you know, that sex is not something casual. But it should also include — it should also include other, you know, information about contraception because, look, I’ve got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. I don’t want them punished with an STD at the age of 16. You know, so it doesn’t make sense to not give them information.”

There are sooooooooo many things I want to YELL at Barack right now.   Here are a few:

Barack, you talk about teaching values and morals, that’s great.   However, your teaching needs some updating because you have left out the end part where if you live short of values and morals, there are CONSEQUENCES!   Let me enlighten you on the difference between”Punishment” and “Consequence.”   “Punishment” is something that is done to you, “Consequence” is the result of something that you have done.   I understand how you easily confuse these concepts as you believe that you are being “punished” for standing by Jeremiah Wright when in fact you are suffering the “consequences” of your action of continuing to support his black liberation theology.

A way to reduce the deficit with NO pain!

by @ 17:15. Filed under Miscellaneous.

But it will require some intelligence!

Saw this article today talking about an agency that was hired to provide assistance payments to Katrina victims.

Now, other than a smarmy “You’re doing a great job Brownie!”, I won’t take the easy path and denigrate the stupidity of yet another bureaucracy.   Nor will I call into question their intelligence when they managed to pay the maximum payout of $150,000 to people who didn’t qualify at all for the program.   I also won’t cast aspersions on their integrity just because the only way this “leaked” out was that they had to put out a contract to hire a collection firm to help them get the money returned.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt because they had a

“sense of urgency in paying Road Home applicants, and ICF knew applicants might eventually have to return some money.”

Here however is the money line of the article:

Brann pointed out that 5,000 collections cases would represent a 4-percent error rate for the Road Home that is “quite good for large federal programs.”

Let’s see, the current Federal budget is $3.1 trillion dollars.   If 4% of that is just “error”, we have $124 Billion we should be able to take out of the budget just by hiring a few people that are smarter than your average fifth grader!   Of course Brann thinks 4% is “quite good”, probably representing an “A” or “A-” in government speak.   If that’s so, the average error rate is probably more like 6% – 7% or around $200 Billion dollars.

The current budget deficit is estimated to be around $400 Billion. I think we’ve just found a way to cut that in half!

What does “Subprime” really mean?

Since last fall we’ve heard a lot about “subprime” mortgages.   We’ve seen their troubles impact the housing, stock, and financial markets as well as cause consumers to feel less like spending.   We’ve heard about them and seen their impact but other than some passing references, I haven’t seen specifics about what these loans look like.

I found this article  today that gives some really frightening insight to what a typical subprime loan and  borrower  looks like.
