The future of Milwaukee?

Due to decades of high crime, high taxes, and high unemployment colliding with rising interest rates, Reuters is reporting houses in Detroit are routinely selling at auction for less than the average price of a new car. Realtor Ron Walraven, who had a house in a suburb of Detroit he listed at $525,000 go for $130,000 at auction, has the money quote at the end of the article – “Once we’ve seen the last person leave Michigan, then I think we’ll be able to say we’ve seen the bottom.
For those that haven’t been paying attention, Milwaukee has suffered through decades of high taxes and high unemployment. Now, we’re suffering through historically-high crime. With everybody in government other than Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker thinking that taxes aren’t high enough, there will only not be a reduction in the growth of taxes, but there will not be any solution to the unemployment crisis. Thanks to Milwaukee Mayor Tom “Milk Carton” Barrett’s refusal to acknowledge there is a crisis of crime, even those few who long for the days of the USSR won’t move in. It’s only a matter of time before Milwaukee follows the death spiral that Detroit is going through.

Revisions/extensions part 2 (6:05 pm 3/18/2007) – Guilty of 1st degree intentional homicide, not guilty of mutiliation of a corpse and guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. May you get Jeffrey Dahmer’s and Jesse Anderson’s fate, Avery.
Revisions/extensions part 1 (5:50 pm 3/18/2007) – Channels 4, 6 and 12 are all streaming the verdict on their sites. Channels 4 and 12 are using the straight pool feed from the courtroom, while 6 is running their on-air feed. The Worst Station In The Nation™ (CBS 58) can’t be bothered.
…the verdict is due in any moment. We were supposed to find out if the scum of the earth got a lifetime residence in some of Wisconsin’s not-finest accomodations or walked at 5:30, but not everybody got there yet.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year
So what if we already had the play-i…er, “opening round” game, and Florida A&M is the first of 64 teams invited to the Big Dance to end their season with a loss. The NCAA tournament starts in, oh, about one and a half hours on CBS and DirecTV for those of you who depend on so it’s time to break out the marinara and start bouncing the mozzarella. These are the nose picks that will either win the WSB Tourney Pick’em ’07 (there’s still room and time) or drive me to the looney bin.

In case you haven’t guessed by the sudden appearance of Blogs4Bauer in the blogroll, I’m a late arriver to the “24” phenomenon. That isn’t stopping me from speculating who the mole is. You can speculate too by voting in this week’s poll. This poll will close at 2000 CDT 3/19/2007, when my TV will be on 6.1 and my computer will be locked into the B4B live thread (as well as a few others).

Why Milo? He was brought into CTU by the original mole, Nina Myers, disappeared for several seasons (during which he bedded and dumped Chloe), and magically rose to IP Manager. He also sent Morris out to his meet with the Black and Decker, and he was one of only two to survive the assault on the first Gradenko “safe house”.
Why not Milo? He did at least try to save Marilyn Bauer.
- Bill Buchanan
Why Bill? He’s the one that released Abu Fayed, who orchestrated the events leading up to the irradiation of Valencia.
Why not Bill? He’s in a position of power, and if he wanted to mole out, it would be for something far, far greater than 5 nukes. Of course, that’s what the Rooskies are aiming for.
- Morris O’Brian
Why Morris? He’s a lush who, after a little bit of persuasion by Black and Decker, created an arming device for the 4 surviving nukes. Also, he’s got a grudge against Milo.
Why not Morris? Is that arming device actually functional? We’ll know next hour.
- Chloe O’Brian
Why Chloe? She’s been around longer than anybody other than Jack, and she hasn’t cracked a smile yet.

Who is in charge in Washington D.C.?
Since I can’t say it nearly as well as Scott Malensek (guest-blogging at Flopping Aces), I’ll simply give you a very brief Cliff’s Notes version and send you over there for the well-researched and lengthy read (do note I’ve disabled comments/pings for this post; if I get requests, I’ll consider opening them up here).
He notes that almost nobody on Capitol Hill has read one report or heard one briefing on Iraq; this despite repeated public requests from the Congresscritters for those reports and briefings. One particularily-embarrassing episode:
This week, after having been unanimously appointed by Congress, America’s commander in Iraq, General Petraeus took a break from his duties to make a public statement for the first time since taking command. Prior to his press conference, the general (who submits reports to the President every single day) offered to take time for a teleconference with the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority leader (both Democrats). They declined. Instead, they chose to meet with leaders from anti-war groups like Moveon.org and others (some of which are actually socialist groups like ANSWER). After meeting with the anti-war lobby instead of the General that Congress appointed to lead operations in Iraq, Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid held their own press conference and unveiled their latest attempt at ending the war in Iraq by any means other than success. They did not consult with the commanders in Iraq, the experts.
Then, he outlines how the wealthy use essentially-unlimited PACs (the only limit is that a PAC can donate $5,000 to a Congresscritter candidate, twice as much as an individual, and contributions of under $200 to a PAC doesn’t have to be reported at all) to funnel literally millions of dollars into politics.

Doyle’s raising taxes $1.74 billion $2.1 billion
Well, I guess the honeymoon between the presstitutes in Wisconsin and Jim “Craps” Doyle (WEAC/Potawatomi-For Sale) is over. Today’s Journal Sentinel has as its banner headline the fact that the Crappy budget has, according to the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau, $1.74 billion in tax and fee increases, broken down thusly:
– $1.37 billion in tax increases:
- $506 million from jacking up the cigarette tax from $0.77/pack to $2.02/pack.
- $417 million from jacking up taxes on the sick
- $272 million that Doyle wants to stick on gasoline sold outside of Wisconsin (that is, if he can get away with not allowing the oil companies to pass along the proposed 2.5%-of-value tax on every gallon of oil used in Wisconsin to Wisconsin consumers)
- $142 million put upon those of you trying to dump your properties as you flee this tax hell through a doubling of the real estate transfer fee (assuming, of course, you can find suck…er, buyers)
– $376.2 million in fee increases:
- $167.9 million in a massive across-the-board increase in vehicle registration fees
- $37.2 million in a near-doubling of the fees for driver’s licenses and photo ID cards
Damn, but it looks like the Pubbies were right when they said last month that it was a $1.7 billion tax increase. Just how big is that? The last sentence of the story starts the thinking, but since the Journtinel couldn’t bring itself to give a percentage, and because public schools tend to de-emphasize math, allow me to run the numbers. It is a 6.78% tax increase over 2 years, or if you prefer it by annum, 3.33%. That is not, repeat, NOT including the “automatic” increases built into the income and sales tax structures that essentially match both inflation and increases in pay. That is in addition to those increases.
But, wait, there’s more. You remember the Craps Anti-Tax Freeze that expired at the end of last year? Doyle wants to bring that back, sans lower jaw (it already lacked teeth). Instead of allowing property tax increases of 2% plus growth and borrowing, he wants 4% plus growth and borrowing. That, folks, is more than what it had gone up prior to the original CATF. Senate Minority “Republican” Leader (dunno whether I should put that last word in quotes yet like I did for the three previous “permanent” holders of that title) Scott Fitzgerald points out that the property taxes that are driving people out of Wisconsin would go up by $350 million this year if CATF Ver. II happens (it would go up about that amount without it as well). Half of that increase would happen under the expired original anti-freeze, but since Fitzgerald only talked about this coming year, you can essentially add that entire amount to the $1.74 billion (actually, a bit more because it’s exponential) to come up with a $2.1 billion tax increase.

Today’s signs that “Global Warming” is a religion
Item #1 – Much like the indulgences that the Catholics sold back in the 15th Century (I swear I was typing this up before the Blogfather brought it up), the high priests of Global Warming have thought up the perfect dodge for their “excessive carbon footprint”, specifically The High Priest himself, Algore – “carbon offsets”. A couple of random thoughts on that:
– I guess we finally found an “offset” program the lieberals will support, mainly because it benefits them instead of “big business”.
– Because the “carbon offset” program is completely unregulated, there is absolutely no verification of whether the entity being bribed is either in a position to reduce its “carbon footprint” or is reducing its own “carbon footprint” to match what is being bought. Do note that I am not saying that it should be either regulated or mandated; if it were so, it would be just another barrier constructed by the illuminati to keep the aspiring masses from improving their own lifestyles.
– Specifically in Algore’s case (H/T – Bill Hobbs via Fred), there is an ethical question of whether he’s actually paying anything. It seems the company that he’s buying those “offsets” from is the one he founded.
Item #2 – The Global Warming disciples are trying to poo-pooh this little story from National Geographic – the dry ice at Mars’ poles have been melting at a prodigious rate the last 3 years (the only 3 years that they’ve been measured with the current level of accuracy). The explanation given by Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, that the warming experienced by both the Earth and Mars is a result of a long-term increase in solar irradiance (one that has started to turn the other direction), has been rejected by the disciples, partly because there isn’t enough accurate historical records on solar irradiance. Like the religious elite they are, they ignore that their case is not exactly supported by the lack of accurate historical records of amounts of greenhouse gases and temperatures.
The disciples’ explanation of Mars’ warming, wobbles in Mars’ orbit, sounds reasonable until one tries to apply that reasoning to Earth’s warming. While the disciples acknowledge that the Earth’s orbit also wobbles, they try to claim that Earth’s “different” because humans are here.
If Abdussamatov is right, the last item of the National Geographic article has a surprise – we’re not going to be warming much longer because the solar irradiance has started to drop.

Endorsement time – the winter edition
Sorry about not following the races as much as I should. I should know better than to trust the presstitutes to do so. Anyway, let’s get rolling:
– There is one statewide race that, despite the silence, is a doozy. It is a 3-way battle for an open seat on the Wisconsin State Supreme Court, one that will decide whether the Lawgivers-In-Black will still have to depend on turncoat Patrick Crooks or gain an absolute majority. In the right corner (at least by default), we have Washington County Circuit Judge Annette Ziegler. In the far-left corner, we have the Jim “Craps” Doyle (WEAC/Potawatomi-For Sale) candidate, Linda Clifford. Out of left field, we have a defense lawyer trying to get a vote on the pending suspension of his law license (and endorsed by Cousin Ed Thompson), Joseph Sommers.
Fortunately, GOP3 has been doing my homework for me. Like Brandon, I am endorsing Annette Ziegler in the primary tomorrow, and will be repeating this in the general election should she survive.
One more thing; while I can’t quite agree with Brandon and the letter-chucking Brad V that there is a “reverse” gender gap, the fact that the unknown Nick Voegeli got as close as he did against the relatively-well-known Jean Hundertmark is strong circumstantial evidence. Of course, outside of the Pubbie insiders, very few people knew that Hundertmark was running either, and there were a lot of non-insiders in the primary.
– The third aldermanic district in Oak Creek (my new district) also has a primary. I’m endorsing Mark Verhalen as he is the only person who is talking tax cuts.

- While the DemocRAT attempt to build the case for the removal of President Bush and Vice President Cheney (aka their “non-binding” retreat-and-defeat resolution; more on that tomorrow when it’s not the weekend) failed to break through the “filibuster” in the Senate (off-topic, paybacks are a stone-cold bitch, aren’t they Dingy Harry?), the leading candidates for the ‘Rat nomination for President are busy one-upping each other. Osama bin Obama wants the troops out of Iraq by March 2008, and Hitlery von der Schlikmeister wants the pullout to start in 90 days – or else.

Potentially huge news on the automotive front

Shortly after The Wall Street Journal reported in today’s editions that GM and the Chrysler Automotive division of DaimlerChrysler were in discussions to jointly develop a replacement for the Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL, the trade magazine Automotive News extrapolated that and earlier reports that DaimlerChrysler was looking to sell Chrysler into claiming that GM was in discussions to buy Chrysler.
Most analysts, including CNBC’s, are discounting the larger buyout. Personally, I think about the only benefit to GM would be that it would hold off Toyota’s bid for being the world’s largest automotive producer for a few more years.

Let’s review the tape, shall we…with some additional information found after reading Larry McReynolds (revised and updated 4:58 pm 2/16/2007)
- 2002 Coca-Cola 600 post-race inspection – The Roush Racing #6 Ford is caught 1/8th inch too low after Mark Martin won the race. Penalty – $50,000 fine to crew chief Ben Leslie. Also, then-NASCAR President Bill France announced a plan to start taking championship points away for future violations of NASCAR’s rulebook (in limited circumstances, involving the “big 3” violations of fuel/engine size and horsepower/tires found post-race, NASCAR had disqualified the team and taken away the points earned).
- 2002 Pepsi 400 (unknown when in the weekend this was discovered)- The Hendrick Motorsports #48 Chevrolet is the first team to have points taken away in the modern penalty era, losing 25 driver’s/owner’s points for being caught with offset mounts for the truck arms (part of the rear suspension). Crew chief Chad Knaus also lost $25,000 in a fine.
- 2002 New England 300 post-race inspection – The Robert Yates Racing #88 Ford is caught 1/8th inch too low after Dale Jarrett finished 3rd in the race. Penalty – 25 driver’s/owner’s points and $20,000 fine to crew chief Todd Parrott.
- 2005 UAW-Ford 500 (fall Talledega race) post-qualifying inspection – The Richard Childress Racing #29 Chevrolet is caught with several unapproved changes relating to airflow in and around the trunk area. Penalty – disallowal of the qualifying time, $10,000 fine to crew chief Todd Berrier, 2-race suspension for Berrier, zero driver’s/owner’s points taken away.
- 2006 Daytona 500 post-qualifying inspection – The Hendrick Motorsports #48 Chevrolet is caught with a trick rear window designed to give an aerodynamic advantage. Penalty – disallowal of the qualifying time, $25,000 fine to Knaus, 4-race suspension for Knaus, zero driver’s/owner’s points taken away from either Jimmie Johnson or owner Jeff Gordon.
- 2006 Daytona 500 post-qualifying inspection – The Hall of Fame Racing #96 Chevrolet is caught with an illegal manifold. Penalty – disallowal of the qualifying time, $25,000 fine to crew chief Phillipe Lopez, 4-race suspension for Lopez, and 25 driver’s/owner’s points taken away (important because it was a new-for-2006 team). Note; discussions of an alliance between HOF Racing and Hendrick Motorsports had fallen through, and HOF Racing just signed an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing.
- 2007 Daytona 500 post-qualifying inspection – The Roush Racing #17 Ford and all three Evernham Racing Dodges are caught with insufficiently-covered holes in the rear wheel wells normally used for the oil cooler. The #17 and #9 suffer the biggest penalties – qualifying times disallowed, $50,000 fines and 4-race suspensions for the crew chiefs, and the loss of 50 driver’s/owner’s points for each driver/team. The #10 and #19 crew chiefs were each suspended 2 races and fined $25,000, with the drivers and owner losing 25 points on each team. As a side note, Ray Evernham, the owner of Evernham Racing, used to be the crew chief on the Hendrick Motorsports #24 Chevrolet before he left to be one of the founding teams for Dodge.
- 2007 Daytona 500 pre- and post-qualifying inspection – The Michael Waltrip Racing #55 Toyota is caught with what turns out to be jet fuel in the intake manifolds. After the removal of the first intake manifold, Mikey was allowed to qualify, but the same substance appeared after qualifying. Perhaps because Toyota is pumping a LOT of money into Hen ¢AR, the penalty isn’t as severe as it could be; the disallowal of the qualifying time (important because the team was not in the top 35 in owners’ points at the end of 2005), the loss of 100 driver’s/owner’s points, a $100,000 fine for the crew chief, the indefinite suspension of the crew chief and team director, and the seizure of the car. Mikey did ultimately race his way into the Daytona 500.
- 2007 Gatorade Duel 2 post-race inspection – The Hendrick Motorsports #24 Chevrolet is found to be 1 inch too low after Jeff Gordon won the 2nd Duel. The only penalty – move the #24 from 4th in the grid for the Daytona 500 to 42nd. Jeffy still gets to keep the win, and there will be no points deduction or fines assessed.
See you at the few short tracks remaining in Wisconsin. To hell with Hen ¢AR!

Iraqi police got into a firefight with a bunch of Al Qaeda in Iraq members on the road between Fallujah and Samarrah, killed a top aide in that organization and, depending on who you believe, wounded and/or captured one Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, the successor to the very deceased Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
