Scum of the earth updates

by @ 16:02. Filed under Compassionate Lieberals, War on Terror.

I haven’t hopped in on the story of a bunch of thugs recreating Kristallnacht on the Army recruiting center near the UWM campus, but there’s a couple of updates that need to have a wider audience.

First, even though the thugs have, so far, only picked up municipal tickets, Jessica McBride is reporting that Milwaukee County DA John Chisholm isn’t ruling out additional charges, even if the Milwaukee Police Department doesn’t recommend any. The catch is, MPD had not refered anything to his office as of this morning (Oh Nan, what’s the delay?), so the DA’s office is in a holding pattern.

Similarily, the feds are in a holding pattern, even though the damage threshhold for a federal felony charge is only $1,000 compared to the state’s $2,500 threshhold. There hasn’t been any word out of the US Attorney’s office, but typically the US Attorney will let the state handle things. I strongly suspect that, if Chisholm starts channeling E. Michael McCan’t, Steve Biskupic will invite the punks for a stay at Club Fed.

Second, I do have to give props to my state Senator, Jeff Plale (D-South Milwaukee). Charlie Sykes has an e-mail from him condemning the punks.

Who is in charge in Washington D.C.?

by @ 12:19. Filed under Politics - National, War on Terror.

Since I can’t say it nearly as well as Scott Malensek (guest-blogging at Flopping Aces), I’ll simply give you a very brief Cliff’s Notes version and send you over there for the well-researched and lengthy read (do note I’ve disabled comments/pings for this post; if I get requests, I’ll consider opening them up here).

He notes that almost nobody on Capitol Hill has read one report or heard one briefing on Iraq; this despite repeated public requests from the Congresscritters for those reports and briefings. One particularily-embarrassing episode:

This week, after having been unanimously appointed by Congress, America’s commander in Iraq, General Petraeus took a break from his duties to make a public statement for the first time since taking command. Prior to his press conference, the general (who submits reports to the President every single day) offered to take time for a teleconference with the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority leader (both Democrats). They declined. Instead, they chose to meet with leaders from anti-war groups like Moveon.org and others (some of which are actually socialist groups like ANSWER). After meeting with the anti-war lobby instead of the General that Congress appointed to lead operations in Iraq, Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid held their own press conference and unveiled their latest attempt at ending the war in Iraq by any means other than success. They did not consult with the commanders in Iraq, the experts.

Then, he outlines how the wealthy use essentially-unlimited PACs (the only limit is that a PAC can donate $5,000 to a Congresscritter candidate, twice as much as an individual, and contributions of under $200 to a PAC doesn’t have to be reported at all) to funnel literally millions of dollars into politics.

If you do nothing else this weekend, go read the whole thing.

Today’s pick-me-up

by @ 18:34. Filed under Politics - National, War on Terror.

With a lot more details and updates over at Hot Air

Iraqi police got into a firefight with a bunch of Al Qaeda in Iraq members on the road between Fallujah and Samarrah, killed a top aide in that organization and, depending on who you believe, wounded and/or captured one Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, the successor to the very deceased Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

‘Tis nice to know that the ‘Rats in the House still have the Algore sense of timing, with their retreat-and-defeat proposal (“unencumbered” by those “pesky” Republicans who wanted to put a support-the-troops amendment in) coming up for a vote tomorrow.

North Korrea supposedly to give up nukes…again

by @ 13:56. Filed under Politics, War on Terror.

(H/T – Sister Toldjah)

The North Koreans appear to have folded on the nuclear issue, tentatively agreeing to initial steps to nuclear disarmament, including what Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill termed specific committments for the North Koreans and a working group to begin meeting in a month.

For those of you that thought that unilateral engagement was the way to go, this was reached through the 6-party talks you poo-poohed.

Of course, the devil, as always with Krazy Kim and company, is not only in the unreleased details, but in the verification. We thought we had a deal with the Kims back in 1994, but a lack of verification and proper details let North Korea continue their parallel nuclear program before the ink was even dry, and ultimately let them reintegrate the supposedly-shut-down program into it.

Revisions/extensions (3:15 pm 2/12/2007) – A further update from the AP gives a rough timeline (North Korea demanded 2 gigawatts of electricity or 2 million barrels of heavy fuel oil; the sources of that energy, South Korea and Russia, balked; the US told North Korea to compromise or the talks were over; and after 16 marathon hours, the North Koreans cracked). Meanwhile, AFP said that it was the Red Chinese that offered that breakthrough and has circulated a “final draft” (unavailable on the wires when I started the update).

Revisions/extensions part 2 (5:04 pm 2/12/2007) – The Japanese Kyodo News Agency says that the NK demand was for both the electricity and oil, Fox News is reporting that the Communists at State bargained away the $25 million sanction slapped on North Korea for counterfeiting American currency, and the latest version of the AP story has both Russia and Japan throwing cold water on the whole works.

Al Qaeda on the run, no film at 5:30 and no column-inches tomorrow

by @ 17:15. Filed under Presstitute Follies, War on Terror.

(H/T – Michelle)

I wonder if it’s because no American choppers have been shot down today, or because some surgically-enhanced golddigger died today, but you won’t hear or read this bit of news in the LeftStream Media. Fortunately, we have the Jawa Report to fill in the gaps:

Coalition forces in Iraq have delivered a series of stunning blows to al Qaeda in Iraq in the last 48 hours.
A key aide to Abu Ayyub al-Masri, the man who replaced Abu Musab al Zarqawi as the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, has been captured south of Baghdad. As A.J. Strata notes, the trail to the al Qaeda leader is fresh: the captured aide admitted to meeting with al Masri yesterday.

Since Taji is north of Baghdad, these two al Qaeda IED cell leaders captured by the U.S. in West Taji are not the same as those above. That’s four al Qaeda leaders captured.

But four is such a lonely number. A facilitator of foreign fighters was captured by the Iarqi Army on the Syrian border. And foreign fighters tend to mean al Qaeda.

Not to be outdone by the IA, the U.S. struck two houses where foreign fighters had gathered—13 jihadis dead. An “individual” associated with foreign fighter facilitation was in the targeted area.

But wait, that’s not all. Coalition Forces conducted an air strike Wednesday targeting an al-Qaida in Iraq-related vehicle-borne improvised explosives devices network near Arab Jabour. Intelligence reports indicated that this network is responsible for a large and devastating number of VBIED attacks in the Baghdad area. They are also responsible for IED and sniper attacks conducted against the Iraqi people and Iraqi and Coalition Forces. Building destroyed, everyone inside presumably dead.

And another terrorist was captured in Taji. In addition to leading a bombing cell, he is also believed to be involved in taking Iraqis hostage and murdering them. Which would mean that he is either al Qaeda or one of the related organizations under the umbrella of the “Islamic State of Iraq”.

So, we have 6 al Qaeda leaders captured, and possibly dozens more killed. All in the last 48 hours.

Bravo Zulo, guys. Keep them running and dying tired.

I wonder if Hiliary still wants to stop the war, or is she good with Al Qaeda finding another home she might occassionally lob a few cruise missiles at?

Do you really want a follower as President?

by @ 7:23. Filed under Politics - National, War on Terror.

The reason I ask is the presumptive Democratic front-runner, Hillary Rodham Clinton, has shown neither leadership nor conviction on Iraq. Today’s OpinionJournal featured article outlines her move from her husband’s position that Hussein needed to be ousted to Retreat and Defeat. To answer their question, that is precisely the stalwart drift she would bring to the Oval Orifice.

Google helping terrorists

by @ 20:49. Filed under War on Terror.

(H/T – See-Dubya guest-blogging for Michelle Malkin while she is over in Iraq)

The Daily Telegraph reports the British Army has found evidence that the terrorists in Basra are using maps generated by Google Earth to target them.

I see this as a problem that ultimately has no real solution. There are just too many entities selling (or making freely-available) high-resolution satellite photos worldwide, some in countries that are less-than-friendly to either the United States or the United Kingdom.

However, that does not leave Google entirely off the hook. They are, after all, an American company which seems to think that providing up-to-date, high-resolution images of places like the Shaibah Logistics Base just outside Basra and Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia is “a good thing”.

Catching up (take 2)

Had this ready to go when my router crapped out on me and I lost this. Let’s see if I can catch up again:

  • John Washburn is still trying to find out exactly what happened in Milwaukee on 11/2/2004. Despite claims from the retiring Milwaukee Police Department chief Nan Heggarty that the investigation into the 2004 election was over on 11/27/2006, there is still no final report forthcoming. After weeks of getting the runaround, John finally got the US Attorney’s office to say that the report will be available in the next month. So, where’s the election records? The FBI says the Milwaukee County DA’s office has them, the DA’s office says they don’t have them. Bear in mind that this investigation was used by the State Doylie Elections Board to not process John’s election complaint.
  • The Dems learned no sense of humility in their dozen years in the political wilderness. Bela Pelosi and company are planning on ramrodding their agenda through the House without so much as a committee hearing or an amendment. Worse, President Bush is set to confirm again and again my fears from 1999 that he wasn’t a conservative. The Asian Badger was right when he predicted a shortage of KY Jelly.
  • Speaking of not-conservative Republicans, Tommy Thompson appears to be serious about running for President in 2008. Not only does he have a website up (once again, I’ll state for the record I will not knowingly link to campaign websites, so you can find it yourself), but he threatened promised Iowans with weekly visits.
  • With a hat tip due Jib, it seems that Taliban head Muhammed Omar has e-mail access. One of his intermediaries has been in contact with Reuters, and Omar says he hasn’t seen Osama Bin Laden since the end of 2001. Hey One-Eye, come on out of hiding so we can confirm you said that (and then confirm your death).
  • Another hat tip, this time to Allahpundit and Owen – a bunch of gunmen overran a National Guard listening post in Arizona. Can we declare war on Mexico, or at least properly militarize the border now, Jefe?
  • Speaking of gunplay, this is how New Years is celebrated on the North Side of Milwaukee. Patrick, I hope you kept your head down when you recorded the audio.

I hope that catches me up through midnight.

The rest of the Saddam execution video

by @ 20:43. Filed under War on Terror.

TV networks worldwide, including the (gum)ball-less Fox News Channel, CNN (which didn’t hesitate to show the Iraqi sniper video), and BBC have refused to show the drop that needs to be heard ’round the world. Fortunately, one of the witnesses used what appears to be a cell phone camera to capture that drop, and put the whole thing out there. Curt at Flopping Aces is among those that have the video – do NOT click that link if you’re squeamish.

Unfortunately, because the amateur filmer didn’t follow Saddam all the way down, we don’t have an official count on how many times he swung, but that’s proof positive that he didn’t escape the noose.

Saddam Hussein to die in the next 24 hours – Update: The time is fixed; 5:30-6 am Baghdad time

by @ 17:39. Filed under War on Terror.

(H/T – See-Dubya guest-blogging at Hot Air)

The wheels of justice certainly are moving faster over in Iraq than they are here. Many sources, including MSNBC, are reporting the last steps before former Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein’s execution takes place are happening. The US military has received a formal request from the Iraqi government to transfer Hussein to Iraqi authorities, his half-brothers visited him presumably for the last time yesterday, taking home some of Hussein’s personal belongings, and one of his lawyers has said he was told by the US military to pick up Hussein’s personal effects (apparently, the family didn’t take them all). Now, Fox News is reporting that a US military source is saying that transfer will happen today. The Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, apparently wanted Hussein’s punishment executed last night, but the logistics weren’t ready yet.

Meanwhile, there has been some confusion over the 30-days stipulation. Some have said that Hussein has to be executed within that 30 days. Some have said that he could only be executed in that window with the express approval of the Iraqi presidency (consisting of President Jalal Talabani and 2 vice-presidents, with the anti-death-penalty Talabani routinely authorizing one of the vice-presidents to authorize executions on his behalf), with punishment carried out on the court’s authority beyond that window. Apparently that’s been ironed out, though there is no specific news of that.

There is a big rush to get this done before the 2nd Eid holiday of the Muslim year. That starts at local sunset Saturday, which, depending on whether it’s the actual position of the sun or a standardized 6 pm local time, is 24 or 25 23 to 24 (need to work on the Milwaukee-to-Baghdad time conversion program) hours from now. SWING, Saddam, Saddam, Saddam, Saddam, SWING!

Revisions/extensions (11:05 am 12/29/2006) – Tick, tick, tick. Fox News is now reporting that Hussein is now in Iraqi as opposed to American custody. My guess is he’s already dead.

Further revisions/extensions (12:27 pm 12/29/2006) – Fox News is reporting the State Department is “absolutely certain” (the nameless bureaucrat’s words) Hussein is still in US custody and will likely be so for the next several days. They don’t call it Foggy Bottom for nothing.

Revisions/extensions #3 (1:38 pm 12/29/2006) – The Confederate Yankee is sticking by his story that Hussein is getting the rope at midnight tonight, and it is being collaborated by Reuters. That would be 3 pm here, and that would put a crimp into Mark Belling’s Year-End Current Events Quiz. Oh well.

R/E #4 (3:56 pm 12/29/2006) – AP is reporting Saddam’s lawyers filed for an restraining order to stop Hussein’s transfer to Iraqi custody before DC District Judge (and chief judge of the FISA Court) Colleen Kollar-Kotelly. Kotelly was appointed to the bench in 1997 by Bill Clinton, and appointed to the FISA Court in 2002 by William Rehnquist. Never mind that he was in their legal custody since 2004 (we’re the caretakers).

Revisions/extensions #5 (4:15 pm 12/29/2006 – moved to the top of the blog) – Fox News and CNN are both reporting that a top Iraqi official that Hussein will be executed before 6 am Saturday 12/30/2006 (Baghdad time). That’s 9 pm tonight here. I’ll get the beer, who has the brats?

R/E #6 (5:39 pm 12/29/2006) – Drudge is reporting that Iraqi State TV says that Saddam will mount the gallows between 5:30 am and 6 am Baghdad time (he converted to EST). So, between 8:30 pm and 9 pm Cheddar time, Saddam will join his sons in Hell. Good bye and good riddance.

Last revision/extension (7:26 pm 12/29/2006) – Fox News reported that last-ditch legal gambit failed. No web story however. SWING, Saddam, Saddam, Saddam, Saddam, SWING!

Post-Christmas quick hits

Sorry about the non-existent blogging the last couple days. There’s a few things I need to catch up on in the typical lull between Christmas and New Year’s. I may or may not expand on them as I see fit.

  • Item #1 on the catchup – gift cards. I love them, and apparently so does Rep. Fred Kessler (D-Milwaukee). Only thing is, he wants 80% of the value of any gift card that is more than 1 year old to go to the state. Especially illuminating is Red Fred’s interview with the Early Spinners over on WISN. I’ll put this in a language he (and the Spotted Chris) can understand – Красное Fred, идет к аду! For the rest of you, that’s Russian for “Red Fred, go to Hell!” (or at least that’s what AltaVista’s BabelFish tells me).
  • Speaking of Freds, a much better Fred, fresh off his victory over me in the Cheddarsphere championship game, is running for alderman down in Racine. May you have as much success there as you did against me.
  • So Gerald Ford was one of the early cut-and-runners, at least according to Bob Woodward. IF that’s true (I’d take the word of a used car salesman over the one of a presstitute), I wouldn’t be shocked; after all, Ford presided over the final defeat of South Vietnam.

Saddam Hussein to be executed in the next 30 days

by @ 8:28. Filed under War on Terror.

CNN and Fox News (saw it on FNC, but CNN has the Web-friendly story first) are reporting that the Iraqi High Tribunal has upheld Saddam Hussein’s conviction and death sentence in the Dujail massacre case. Under Iraqi law, Saddam now has no more than 30 days left to live.

Good bye and good riddance, Saddam. Satan is waiting for you.

Revisions/extensions (8:40 am 12/26/2006) – Allahpundit has more background, including why Saddam tried to delay this until April.

Al Qaeda is stepping forth to claim victory

by @ 15:19. Filed under Politics - National, War on Terror.

(H/T – a pair of Free Republic posts)

ABC News is reporting via Brian Ross’ blog that Al Qaeda has contacted the Democrats to say they deserve credit for their victory in November. Quoting Al Qaeda spokesman Ayman al-Zawahiri (as translated by ABC News) – “The first is that you aren’t the ones who won the midterm elections, nor are the Republicans the ones who lost. Rather, the Mujahideen — the Muslim Ummah’s vanguard in Afghanistan and Iraq — are the ones who won, and the American forces and their Crusader allies are the ones who lost.” Well, thank fuck you presstitutes and retread hippie voters.

Meanwhile, al-Jazeera (left unlinked here) is reporting that their man in Iraq, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, not only wants us out of Iraq inside of a month, but wants all our heavy weapons. Allow me to answer that – NUTS! For al-Baghdadi, el-Slimeroad and those of you with public school educations, let Charlie explain that answer, or read the account of the Army medic who handled the translations, Ernie Premetz (courtesy the St. Petersburg Times).

Pentagon to cut-and-runners – stuff it

by @ 11:52. Filed under War on Terror.

(H/T – Allahpundit)

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Pentagon is going to ask for some more troops (perhaps as many as 40,000 to join the 140,000 currently there) to go along with the rest of its plan for victory in Iraq. The rest of the plan:

– More industrial aid to Iraq
– An offensive against Muqtada al-Sadr’s Shiite insurgents
– Another offensive against the Sunni insurgents in Al Anbar province

Hopefully, the rules of engagement will be simple; see the enemy, kill same. Hopefully the ‘Rats in Congress will vote for victory instead of defunding, but I’m not holding my breath.

So the Baker/Hamilton Commission is going for Retreat and Defeat

by @ 14:07. Filed under Politics - National, War on Terror.

Allahpundit and Peter analyze it pretty damn well. Make no mistake; even though there is no firm timetable for the last chopper to leave the US Embassy in Baghdad under enemy fire, negotiating with the two thuggish countries that are turning Iraq into a hellhole along with a reduced presence both in numbers and in role for our troops over there will inevitably have the same effect on Iraq and Lebanon that negotiating with North Vietnam did for South Vietnam and Cambodia, namely a collapse of governments not necessarily anti-American in favor of virulently-anti-American ones. The effect in the rest of the world will also mirror the Vietnam experience; other countries will (rightly) see the US as an untrustworthy partner, unwilling to protect any interests that can’t be done via a short cruise-missile barrage.

One thing left untouched by just about everybody; Iraq will be turned into an unblockable superhighway between Iran and the frontier of Israel. Hope everybody likes strontium-90 and caesium-137 in their food, because one way or the other, that inevitable war will go nuclear.

Random Korean/ChiCom thoughts

by @ 8:36. Filed under War on Terror.

(H/T, many thanks, and a plea to reopen registration – Allahpundit)

Item #1 – The New York Times reports that both the Red Chinese and South Koreans will continue to maintain significant business deals with North Korea. Indeed, the ChiComs are refusing to inspect cross-border commerce (I’m shocked, SHOCKED that they would refuse this after demanding that such inspections be made voluntary).

As for the South Koreans, we should no longer concern ourselves with the fate of Seoul when considering whether to do the one thing that will disarm Krazy Kim the Younger (forced regime change). Indeed, we should pull our troops out of South Korea and conduct the operation as an amphibious/air campaign. Glad to see the SKs are practicing their duck-and-cover technique over on Fox; the next time, it probably will be for real regardless of what else happens.

Item #2 – The Daily Telegraph reports that the Royal Navy, once the unrivaled master of the seas and the victim of 9 years of ‘Rat-style cutbacks under the Labour Party, has been so emaciated that they will be no more than bit players in any naval blockade. And for you lefties out there; all of these cuts were planned before Iraq:

  • The attack submarine force is down 17% (to 10), and will shortly be losing another one for 2 years while the first-in-class HMS Astute (which is due to replace the HMS Sovereign, scheduled to be decommissioned no later than January 2007) undergoes sea trials.
  • The surface “tin-can” fleet is down 29% to 25 hulls, with only 8 destroyers (with no effective short-range anti-aircraft/missile defense) and 17 frigates (specializing in anti-sub warfare, containing short-range but no long-range anti-aircraft/missile defense).
  • The baby-carrier fleet has been cut from 3 to 2, with HMS Invincible put in mothballs last year. While the Telegraph bemoans the loss of the Sea Harrier squadrons, they have been replaced by the more-capable Harrier GR.7 and GR.9.

Hmmm, any lessons to be learned here? I do note that the ‘Rats want to draw down our military in a similar fashion. I further note that the last time the Royal Navy was drawn down, the Argentines thought it would be a good time to go grab the Falklands.

Item #3 – The Washington Post reports that the policy chief for Japan’s ruling party is opening questioning whether Japan should remain non-nuclear.

Japan has a LOT to worry about from a nuclear Korea. Before the Rape of Nanking, there was the 30+-year rape of Korea, which continued until the end of World War II. Like much of the rest of the world, the Koreans have long memories and aren’t exactly forgiving. Even if Krazy Kim the Younger does eventually disappear without nuking Tokyo, if a reunited Korea is nuclear, it’s only a matter of time before Japan gets nuked again if they don’t take the “15 minutes” that it would take for them to go nuclear.

Speaking of that, does anybody doubt that there would be actual sanctions imposed on Japan if they were to take that step? Heck, if it wouldn’t be for the US’ veto seat and the 7th Fleet, it may well face UN-sanctioned military action.

A crAP reporter worked for Saddam

by @ 17:58. Filed under Presstitute Follies, War on Terror.

A FReeper named jveritas, who has been very busy translating various documents seized in Iraq, just translated a gem of a document that somebody in the (cr)AP had a second employer in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Since I don’t know Arabic, I’ll have to trust that the following translation is accurate:

Republic of Iraq

The Presidency of the Republic

The Intelligence Service

Date: 25/7/2000

Number: 6146

Secret

To: 5th / 4th / 13th Directorates

We were informed from one of our sources (the degree of trust in him is good) who works in the American Associated Press Agency that the agency broadcasted to through computer to its branches worldwide the following:

1. The new agency for inspecting the Iraqi weapons (UNMOVIC) started on 11/7/2000 a training program for 4 weeks which includes historical, legal, administrative, and political subjects that are related to the weapons inspection in Iraq.

2. The training include lectures about the ballistic missiles and the biological and chemical weapons and the import and export of weapons in addition to a session in security arrangements prepared by the American government.

3. Hans Blix who head the new team mentioned that he will send a smaller team to Iraq in late August 2000 and the inspections operations will focus on choosing the locations that was under the control of the UNSCOM committee

4. The agency adds that Iraq prevented the old committee from returning to Iraq and that high Iraq officials said they will not accept new inspectors from the new committee but some other left the possibility of negotiations open.

5. The agency ends its article by saying that the sanctions against Iraq will not be lifted unless Iraq cooperate with the new inspectors and after it is decided that Iraq is free from weapons of mass destructions.

Please review and benefit"¦ with regards
