In case you haven’t been over to The Wisconsin Sports Bar yet this afternoon, Chris the head barkeep (and my blogfather) decided to shutter the doors. DAMMIT!

The repository of one hard-boiled egg from the south suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (and the occassional guest-blogger). The ramblings within may or may not offend, shock and awe you, but they are what I (or my guest-bloggers) think.

I should have done this last week after meeting Chad in my bonzai run to Minneapolis, and especially after Shoebox did a segment on his show, but I’m extremely forgetful. In any case, running into him again out here at the State Policy Network annual meeting jogged my memory, and it’s past time to add Grizzly Groundswell to the ever-growing roll. I’m sure I’ll be adding more tomorrow after SamSphere.
Or at least everybody should like Kung Fu Quip. Michael Turk, the proprietor, is busy creating a bunch of Little Known Facts About Sarah Palin on his Twitter feed, and that’s just a taste of what he does.
Revisions/extensions (1:45 pm 8/29/2008) – The same needs to be said for Sarah Palin Facts. My favorite so far – “Sarah Palin fishes salmon by convincing them it’s in their interest to jump into the boat.”
A couple of items:
– First, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve changed the embed code for Day by Day. For some odd and untraceable reason, a few people have been having problems with the mouseover JavaScript, so I switched to the standard iframe embed. As a bonus, it now displays the most-current strip instead of attempting to display the current day’s strip (which doesn’t exactly work when there is no “current day” strip).
– Those of you who put Akismet 2.1.7 on your blogs have probably noticed that you can’t delete spam. The folks at Automattic have released 2.1.8 to fix that, but for some reason that release isn’t triggering the “auto-discovery” feature in the newer WordPress builds. Until that happens, you can head to the WordPress Akismet plugin page to grab the ZIP file, unzip it, and upload the contents to the appropriate folder (…/wp-content/plugins/akismet).
If it’s Tuesday, and it’s time to bloat the roll, it must be Two-for-Tuesday. First up, Blogs of War. I’ve been following John Little on Twitter for a while, so it’s only natural to add his blog to the roll.
Next, it’s Right Voices. Pam somehow found one of yesterday’s Scrambles, which allowed me to find her blog.
Both are worthy additions to the over-bloated roll and feed reader. Guess doing the Scrambles are going to take a bit longer now. Oh well; that’s the price of reading too many good blogs.
Old dummy me, despite being a fan of Chris Muir’s “Day by Day”, hadn’t added the best cartoon on the ‘Net until now. Chris even added a nice little mouseover feature, which is what I’m using.
There is another reason besides that I’m adding it now; Chris needs your help. The cartoon is now his job, and he needs some cash to keep it going. He’s even throwing in some goodies for the donors. I’ve done the Sam Level; surely you can do something. The details are back on his main page.
In case you haven’t noticed, Mary Katharine Ham has begun the transition of the Washington Examiner to the new dcexaminer.com site. That means all of the DC Examiner blogs have moved, so here’s the very-short list of those I’ve kept my eye on, complete with working URLs (and some new ones in the roll):
– Yeas & Nays
– Nate Beeler’s Toons
– Tapscott’s Copy Desk
– Ham Blog (which, like the blog of any good overworked techie, isn’t quite done yet)
Is there anything else over at Bill Sammon’s place that I can shill? :-)
I know mhking from the days back at Free Republic, and was saddened when he had to give up the original Ramblings Journal. There is good news; it’s back, and though it isn’t updated as often as the old place, it is still a must-read.
It’s relatively-painless, and for non-power-users, unnecessary. It does require both a re-login and a database update, so hopefully you remembered your passwords.
The full list of fixes is over here.
Over the last few days, I haven’t been able to access certain sites, such as Sheboygan Shenanigans and the #dontgo Twitter feed. What those sites have in common are domain servers from domaincontrol.com (specifically the NS47 and NS48 servers). The default RoadRunnerWI DNS servers lost connectivity with them sometime on July 31.
After a pair of web chat sessions, and a lengthy phone call with customer service, I finally got a fix from RR. If you are unable to access those sites (or others that have domain servers on ns47.domaincontrol.com/ns48.domaincontrol.com), you need to change your DNS servers manually to the following:
Primary – 4.2.2.2
Secondary – 4.2.2.3
Hopefully RoadRunner will have a more-permanent fix for their default DNS servers soon, now that they know something is hosed with them.
I have to thank silent E for finally waking me up out of my stupor; until he posted the early edition of this morning’s Scramble, I had assumed that Jeni’s site simply went dark.
Revisions/extensions (9:06 pm 8/4/2008) – Jim Lynch reports that he is unable to get to Call Congress Back down in Florida. Houston, we have a problem.
Attention spam bots, splogs, and proprietors of same – you might want to take a look at the revised General Policies for this site, specifically the no-falsified-attribution requirement. Those who decide to misattribute works published here will be dealt with harshly.
I’m headed out to the wilds of the Boundary Waters on Wednesday, so this place will be in the capable hands of Shoebox and the plethora of guest-bloggers until the 15th.
On that note, I’ve added a new guest-blogger to join Aaron, Fred, Leslie and Patrick – silent E.
If the IE problems exposed by Sitemeter weren’t enough, Blogger is once again having a major malfunction. Over the last couple days, many blogs, from Badger Blog Alliance to Folkbum’s Rambles and Rants, have suffered the wrath of an out-of-control Blogger, and their members have been blocked by Google from putting up new posts as they have been dumped into the Google/Blogger “splog” file.
At first, I thought this was an extension of the war against the PUMAs that happened the other week, mainly because my feed reader is highly right-centric (self-preservation is an honorable goal, after all), and the that’s where I noted the problems. However, the reports are starting to come in that the left end of the blogosphere is also being heavily-affected. Once again, a technology I left behind (more or less; The Bar is still a Blogger/Sitemeter place) has demonstrated an Epic FAIL.
Hopefully everybody will get the splog lock lifted quickly.
Metaphorically-speaking, at least. Please welcome BipolarNation to the roll. Yes, they’re local.
I’ve included Dr. Melissa Couthier’s efforts as a co-blogger at Right Wing News enough times, I figured I may as well add her personal blog to the ever-growing roll.
I could’ve said, “Ick,” but that wouldn’t quite be accurate. Please welcome Ick’s Corner to that overbloated roll to your right,.
No, not this place, American and Proud. While there is no change in the main blog address, there is a change in the feed address. It is now http://www.americanandproud.net/?feed=rss2.
Revisions/extensions (2:43 pm 7/19/2008) – First some not-so-good news. American and Proud is not quite running right as I post this. Seems a fix I suggested so the older posts show up didn’t quite take. Sorry about that, Robert.
Now, some good news – Fausta’s Blog is back to its normal, own domain. Again, there is a feed change, this time because Fausta made the jump from Blogger to WordPress, so those of you who have her in your feed readers need to change that to http://faustasblog.com/?feed=rss2.
I picked this one up over in the comments section of one of Patrick’s posts, so I’ll give the hat tip to him. Leaving Wisconsin is chronicling all the companies that are taking the bastardization of the 1980s tourism slogan to heart and escaping.
R&E (6:19 pm 7/18/2008) – Lousy fat fingers forced me to clean up the spelling. Mea culpa.
I haven’t had my morning Dew yet, so I don’t have anything really witty to say. However, I do recommend adding North Shore Exponent to your rolls and readers because Kyle Maichle does have a way with words.
Thanks for kicking me to this side of the blogging world, Chris. There’s a rumor that Godzilla will be making a return appearance to the Bar to help celebrate, along with the confirmed Marilyn Monroe and the Beatles.
HOORAY BEER!
There’s too many changes, both additions and subtractions, to sum up. I’ve thrown in a few of the Chatizens of the Ed Morrissey Show, a few other new(er) blogs, and The Wisconsin Institute for Leadership, while taking out a few dead blogs. All I have to say is, “Let there be bloat!”
Revisions/extensions (6:50 pm 7/10/2008) – Let’s see if I can remember all the additions:
– The Wisconsin Institute for Leadership
– Righty Blog
– Iowahawk
– The Next Right
– Ladies Logic
– My World
– Perfunction
– Radio Blogger
– Anger Central
– The Savage Republican
I probably am still missing a few (or more than a few) good blogs.
R&E part 2 (7:34 pm 7/10/2008) – I knew there was somebody I forgot; Katie Harbath.
R&E part 3 (7:37 pm 7/10/2008) – Make it two; Instapundit (very bad Egg; forgetting everybody’s Blogfather, even though he never got an Instalanche).
R&E part 4 (7:45 pm 7/10/2008) – The quest for 300 continues unabated with Stix Blog.
R&E part 5 (8:00 pm 7/10/2008) – Growin’, growin’, growin’. Keep them roll’s a-bloatin’. Adding The American Thinker this time around.
John Hawkins sent an invitation this way to participate in his latest right-of-center bloggers poll, so Shoebox and I both submitted our lists of favorite gubernatorial/national elected Republicans. We could send between 1 and 10, and I chose 8. While I don’t know who Shoe voted for, here’s my list (in no particular order beyond what I typed in):
– Paul Ryan
– Marsha Blackburn
– Bobby Jindal
– Sarah Palin
– Jeff Flake
– Steve King
– Jim DeMint
– Tom Coburn
To see which ones (if any) made it into the top 20, as well as the complete top 20, you’ll have to head to Right Wing News.
We also submitted our least-favorite elected Republicans; that list will be out tomorrow.
How long have I been blogging? How long have I been a Moron? Then how did I manage to not have protein wisdom on the roll before now? Mea culpa maxima.
Eric of the Tygrrrr Express has moved to his own server at http://www.tygrrrrexpress.com/. Please change your rolls and feeds accordingly.
Among the things I missed yesterday was Mary Katharine’s return to the blogosphere at her new employer’s place. Guess it’s time to change the roll to the new home of Ham Blog.
I could put up the theme from “Welcome Back Kotter”, but she’d probably kill me.
