What is missing from this story?

by @ 7:12. Filed under Presstitute Follies.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel acted as a megaphone for a conglomerate of groups moaning that the poor economy and high oil prices are squeezing seasoned citizens. They run through the usual bogeymen of health care, mortgages, rent, food, and transportation, but miss the fat 15,000-pound elephant in the room – TAXES. Gee, I wonder why.

“Snagged”? More like “Caught Not Teaching Properly”.

by @ 10:55. Filed under Education, Presstitute Follies.

The former word is the lede in this JSOnline DayWatch article on the growing number of schools and school districts that simply refuse to teach to a minimum standard, including Milwaukee Public Schools and Racine Unified. It’s a word that one would expect from WEAC and MTA, not a news organization that supposedly is interested in proper education.

I do have issues with the federal government having to lay down the law, but it’s painfully obvious that nobody in Wisconsin has the balls to hold MPS and RUSD accountable for creating uneducated dolts.

What’s Wrong With Chris Matthews?

by @ 4:54. Filed under Presstitute Follies.

This is not the typical “Chris Matthews is nothing but a leftist hack,” complaint. I’m really wondering if there isn’t something mentally wrong with Chris Matthews!

In this video, Chris is talking with MN Senator Amy Klobuchar who is at the Barack Obama event in St. Paul Tuesday night. Chris opens up with a crack about the Republican convention coming to town and starting with a stop at the Larry Craig bathroom. OK, Craig made his bed (so to speak), he can lie in it. But next, Matthews makes a smart ass remark about the Republicans “celebrating the bridge collapse in St. Paul.”

What the hell?

13 people died as a result of that collapse. The FTSB’s preliminary report sites the cause as gusset plates that were under designed. They’ve further stated that they would not be caught as a part of regular maintenance.

Maybe Chris will be starting a one man comedy show entitled “Katrina, If you can’t swim, have I got a storm for you!”

by @ 12:19. Filed under Presstitute Follies, War on Terror.

Jim Hoft has the details of the AP (or if you prefer, crAP) getting caught outright lying about Ayatollah Ali Sistani issuing fatwas authorizing the use of force against Americans in Iraq. Words escape me, especially since the clock is ticking.

Only a liberal would see high prices this way

(H/T – Donna Martinez)

I honestly don’t know where to begin with this New York Times article quoting liberal after Marxist extolling the virtues of unafforable food, so I’ll probably ramble and shamble.

And if American staples like soda, fast-food hamburgers and frozen dinners don’t seem like such a bargain anymore, the American eating public might turn its attention to ingredients like local fruits and vegetables, and milk and meat from animals that eat grass.

More-likely, given the rush to corn-a-hole and bo(v)i(ne)diesel, we’ll turn our attention to imported foods as there won’t be any land available for those boutique foods.

Urging others to eat better (and thus more expensive) food is not elitist, (Alice Walters) said. It is simply a matter of quality versus quantity and encouraging healthier, more satisfying choices. "Make a sacrifice on the cellphone or the third pair of Nike shoes," she said.

Now we get to the nitty-gritty of the Marxist nature of the Food Snobs. It truly is a case of food or lifestyle for them.

"Someone on the margin who says "˜I’m struggling’ would say rising food costs are in no way a positive," said Ephraim Leibtag of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. Even if the food budget isn’t an issue, there are plenty of people who view low-cost food as a national triumph.

"If you think that mass production and vast distribution predicated on cheap energy is a good system, then the dollar hamburger is a good thing,” Mr. Leibtag said.

I don’t think I’m struggling (neither am I living high on the hog), but rising food costs are in no way a positive because I believe in mass production and vast distribution predicated on cheap energy. With his distain for capitalism, no wonder Mr. Leibtag works for the gubmint.

Although prices for organic groceries are rising at least as fast as their conventional counterparts,….

I find it funny that this was buried on page 2 of the web version, well after the third-paragraph claim that organics weren’t going up in price.

Re: Does Unity Trump Policy?

Carol Platt Liebau asks the question after Robin Toner of the New York Times openly wishes the populace has moved far enough to the left that Barack Obama could claim to be a “uniter” without abandoning any of his ultra-liberal roots. Short answer, “Hell no!”

I would be remiss if I didn’t take a whack or two at the pinata that is Toner’s screed. First, she places all the blame on Republicans. I have to question whether she doesn’t remember the mock funerals the House ‘Rats gave each and every Reagan budget or whether she considers that “good, clean, bipartisan fun”. How about the judicial filibusters, Toner?

Second, while she notes Bill Clinton claimed to be a uniter in 1992, I notice absolutely no reference to George W. Bush’s “I’m a uniter, not a divider” line in the 2000 campaign. I guess nothing short of unconditional surrender from Republicans is good enough for Toner, especially since Bush came pretty close to that and he got nothing but hate from the oh-so-tolerant Left.

Theft of a graphic? (Update – LIKELY)

by @ 12:35. Filed under Presstitute Follies.

Jim Lynch did a recreation of one of Geno’s “Speak English” signs yesterday. Indeed, he noted that it was a reproduction as he could not find a clear picture of the sign in question.

Imagine his surprise when, while surfing through Yahoo’s news, he found a story from Agence France-Presse that contained a very familiar graphic (I do have screen prints of both pages at his request). I don’t have the equipment to compare what AFP is claiming is their own to Jim’s graphic (especially the large version) so I don’t have the “Presstitute Follies” tag on it, but they are eerily-similar. Indeed, if it were a photo, why would it be cropped so closely?

Revisions/extensions (12:58 pm 3/21/2008) – Jim sends along a site, specifically WFMZ-TV 69News, that has an actual photo of the sign. Though it is not a high-quality picture, neither Jim’s graphic nor the one APF claims is a picture taken by them is the sign; “America” is capitalized on the sign, and is not on the graphic.

Hence, I’ve moved this into the “Presstitute Follies” category. Guess AFP’s too lazy to send an actual photographer to Philly for an actual picture and would prefer to rip off bloggers. Bad decision.

Not all polls are created equal

Jim Geraghty sniffed something wafting from a Washington Post poll that had John McCain down nationally by 6 to Hillary Clinton and 12 to Barack Obama. He took a look at the crosstabs, and found that 15% weren’t even registered to vote.

Ed Morrissey dug a bit deeper and found a serious flaw in the identification. Self-idenitying party idenfitication in the WaPo poll was 40% Democratic, 28% Republican, 28% independent, which isn’t exactly what Rasmussen recently found (38.7% D/33.1% R/28.2% I). Worse, when WaPo pushed the independents and folded it into the results, it turned into 55% Dem, 36% Pubbie.

The takeaway paragraph from Ed is worth archiving:

The result is an unreliable poll, but one hell of a headline. McCain trails by twelve! And when McCain beats Obama or Clinton, we’ll hear once again that the election had to have been stolen "” because all of the polls showed McCain behind.

Just how inaccurate? Rasmussen’s tracking poll has had McCain up on Clinton since the start of the track on February 7, and McCain up on Obama since February 23.

Of course, we don’t do a national election, but 51 individual state-by-state-by-federal-district contests. I believe you know how much salt should be taken with any national poll; the question is whether you have enough left after The Winter That Won’t Die™.

Busted

I love it when a plan comes together. The gang at Gop3 whack the Journtinel’s attempt to do some fishing for a hit piece on Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker. First, the initial cast by the Journtinel:

Have county transit changes affected you?
How have you been affected by Milwaukee County Transit System fare increases and service cuts? Please contact Journal Sentinel reporter Larry Sandler at lsandler@journalsentinel.com to let him know, and please include your name and a telephone number where you can be reached.

Next, the definitive answer that won’t be published from Brian Collar:

Larry,

As a student of Marquette I’ve been affected by the bus transit situation. It costs more and more to go to Marquette because the property taxes that landowners have to pay to work and live in Milwaukee that finance an ineffective and costly bus transit situation mean that I can’t have a car without hefty parking fees, whether for Marquette sponsored parking or for landlord sponsored parking. The fact that city and state leaders, with the notable exception of County Executive Scott Walker, keep relying on out-dated systems of transportation means that more money drive (sorry, bad pun intended) less efficient modes of transportation as politicians try to decide for us how to run our lives. Fewer taxes in Milwaukee (and Wisconsin, for that matter) means more opportunity for business and landowners to invest and compete in the near-Marquette community which could provide the very opportunities for less costly parking options that employment-opportunities seeking students like myself need.

I’m sure this won’t make the story your editors were asking for but I thought you might appreciate some input.

Thanks,

Brian Collar

It’s a good thing Scott Walker doesn’t have a birthday tomorrow; next thing you know, the local sorry excuse for a paintcatcher would take a cue from the Gray Lady and say Walker’s too young to be county exec.

Oh, and what’s affecting me is having to pay an outrageous gas tax so that those too lazy to own a car don’t have to feel the full effects of a 50% increase in the cost of fuel (closer to 100% if one uses diesel, like MCTS).

I don’t mind sharing the judging duties

The boss at Hot Air and USA Today both agree that this comment from 29Victor on the New York Times’ hit piece on John McCain’s place of birth (in the Panama Canal Zone to two wed American citizens) is the Comment of the Day™:

Iraqi WMD revelation buried somewhere in the memory hole

by @ 10:59. Filed under Presstitute Follies, War on Terror.

(H/Ts – Bluto/The Jawa Report and memeorandum)

The editorial page editors at The Wall Street Journal take their makeup-and-camera counterparts at CBS‘s “60 Minutes” to task for buring a rather telling portion of Scott Pelley’s interview with George Piro, who was the one who debriefed Saddam Hussein after his capture:

Mr. Piro: “The folks that he needed to reconstitute his program are still there.”

Mr. Pelley: “And that was his intention?”

Mr. Piro: “Yes.”

Mr. Pelley: “What weapons of mass destruction did he intend to pursue again once he had the opportunity?”

Mr. Piro: “He wanted to pursue all of WMD. So he wanted to reconstitute his entire WMD program.”

Mr. Pelley: “Chemical, biological, even nuclear.”

Mr. Piro: “Yes.”

Now, why do you suppose CBS would bury evidence of Saddam Hussein’s continuing desire to get all manner of weapons of mass destruction, especially in the fall 2002-spring 2003 time frame, countries such as Russia, France and Germany were chomping at the bit to satisfy Hussein’s desire for WMDs? Could it be that it might suggest that President Bush was right in taking his regime and ultimately him down?

The decline and fall of “Old Media”

by @ 18:05. Filed under Presstitute Follies.

I guess I could say that this is a Ham family affair, because the hat tips for both halves come from them. First, let’s take the Newsbusters way-back machine back 20 years (H/T – Mary Katharine Ham), back before blogs, back to the dawn of conservative media, and back to the time when “alternative” media meant “Communist”. CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather was spoiling for a fight with then-Vice President George H.W. Bush, and, along with politics producer Richard Cohen, decided to ambush Bush on live TV over Iran-Contra with the 12th and last in a series of candidate profiles. Needless to say, that sort of backfired (transcript courtesy RatherBiased.com). The actions of Rather were so egregious that the Media Research Center quoted Sam Donaldson (a hack in his own right) as saying, “Rather went too far….I don’t think we can get to a situation where we make — on our own authority — accusations.”

We all know what happened in the succeeding 20 years; the “Old Media” turned even farther to the left and the remainder all-but-abandoned the pretense of impartiality, the New Media (talk radio, blogs, and conservative forums) rose up to fill that void, and as a result, the readership, profitability and ultimately the stock prices of “Old Media” companies collapsed.

That brings us to the World Economic Forum in Davros, Switzerland. Yesterday, Columbia University (yes, that Columbia University, home of the Columbia School of Journalism) President Lee Bollinger announced his support for government subsidies for “Old Media” (H/T – Jon Ham).

If you were wondering about the position of the Columbia School of Journalism’s dean, Nick Lemann, Forbes’ Carl Lavin has that disappointment. The upshot: “Right now the mismatch between the social mission of journalism and the market support for that mission seems to be growing, so I think we should explore other means of support for serious journalism. Per the above, these can be, and generally have been in the US, policy interventions that amount to indirect rather than direct government subsidies. But I’m not against subsidies per se, if we can establish BBC-like safeguards of editorial independence.”

I guess they learned nothing over the last 20 years.

Darshan Dhaliwal, Pubbie-only donor?

That is exactly what Raquel Rutledge, Jennie Tunkieicz, Ben Poston, and their editors at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel would want you to believe. In their story about how Dhaliwal sold unbranded gasoline as BP gasoline, they gleefully point out how closely he was tied to both Tommy Thompson and President Bush.

Just one sliiiiiiiiiiight problem; they never heard of Jessica McBride. Her very-quick search through the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign archives revealed a who’s-who of Democrats and liberals very-amply supported by Dhaliwal, including $17,000 to Jim Doyle (almost twice the amount given to both the Thompson state and federal campaigns combined) and a $500 donation to Louis Butler during his previous, failed run for the state Supreme Court.

I decided to run Dhaliwal’s various donations, both state and federal (the latter from the FEC), through the spreadsheet, and imagine my surprise to find the following over the last 16 years (14 on the federal side):

– $75,980 in donations to 58 Democrats and liberal-leaning candidates and committees overall
– $53,280 in donations to the Wisconsin (not federal) campaigns of 48 Democrats and liberal-leaning candidates and committees
– $21,800 in donations to 13 Republican candidates overall (no non-Republican conservative-leaning candidates or committees)
– $17,500 in donations to the Wisconsin (not federal) campaigns of 11 Republicans

Hmmm, why do you think the Fifth Column at Fourth and State only mentioned Thompson and Bush, and went out of their way to avoid any mention of Democrats or Loophole Louis? Could it be that the presstitute-‘Rat alliance has elections to ste…er, win?

Why does government continue to insist on leaking secrets to the press?

by @ 8:51. Filed under Presstitute Follies, War on Terror.

First, we had ABC News telling us about the Transportation Security Agency’s Operations Center (H/T – Michelle Malkin). Now, we have Meg Jones of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, in a puff piece about how the FAA and NORAD track Santa, telling anybody with an Internet connection pretty much how to find the radar facility that tracks all planes flying above 8,000 feet around Lake Michigan, including O’Hare. At least ABC News didn’t tell certain “interested” parties how to find the facility within a roughly-20-mile drive up and down a single street busy enough to conceal drive-by surveillance or show a picture of the outside of said facility.

The John F. Kerry Award in the Des Moines Register debate goes to…

(H/T – Allahpundit, with pic credit to Michelle)

4hands.jpg

…Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and John McCain for raising their hands to the “Who thinks Gorebal Warming is serious and is caused by man? Show of hands, now!” question before Fred Thompson laid the smackdown on Carolyn Washburn’s candy ass, and like Captain Tenneal, said, “Well, you’re wrong.” AP notes that Romney stuck his finger half into the wind, then clapped when Thompson laid the smackdown. And yet people wonder why I think there’s more than a bit of Flipper Kerry in Romney.

Bravo Zulus to Thompson, Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo, and Alan Keyes for refusing to march to the tune of Nurse Rached (thanks for the name, Fred Barnes).

When is a “current aide” suddenly a “former aide”?

by @ 6:57. Filed under Presstitute Follies.

When said Democratic aide is fired several hours after being arrested for attempting to solicit sex from a minor:

WASHINGTON (AP) – A former aide to Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., was in federal custody after being arrested on a charge of attempting to sexually exploit a minor.

James Michael McHaney was fired Friday from his job as a scheduler for Cantwell, hours after he was arrested by FBI agents. The FBI said in court papers that McHaney is accused of trying to set up a meeting with a witness posing online as a teenage boy.

Does anybody really think that the AP would have used “former” had Cantwell been a Republican?

A-planting we will go (Day 2)

Word of warning revision (2:50 pm 11/30/2007) – The free-fire portion of the discussion is to be between each individual commenter and me, not between commenters. Just in case you forgot, this is my place; I pay the hosting bill.

A pair of updates that I waited until midnight to fly with (well, actually, I prepped this before midnight, but thanks to the magic of WordPress, they’re going out at the gong):

– When I last left this, we were at 8 plants. Well, Michelle’s upped the count to 9, though I don’t know whether to classify CAIR’s Yasmin as simply a fresh species or start a whole separate genus for groups merely aligned with the ‘Rats. Ah, tahellwitchit, since I call them DhimmiRATs, it counts. Since I remember 30 questions, we’re now at a full 30% of the questions being plants.

– Duncan Hunter, bless his soul, has a heart of a lion (and the money and support of a flea). My mailbox has a copy of a letter he sent head gardener Hillary Clinton:

November 29, 2007

Dear Senator Clinton,

Grading the Pubbie CommieNewsNetwork/BoobTube debate

I was going to go through the notes, but given the fact the DhimmiRATs had full planting rights in the organic fertilizer that is CNN, I only have one grade to give to all involved –

F

That was a waste of 2:15 of my life, made worse by the fact I split time between that “debate”, some serious drinking, and Hot Air Live, and I didn’t get anything of note accomplished. The only positives were the Michelle appearance on Hot Air Live (which, sadly, was plauged with technical problems, and which I didn’t spend nearly enough of my limited attention span on) and some nice scenery pics from MKH.

Plant ’em! (and we’re up to 8 of 30 as of 4 pm 11/29/2007)

If anyone is wondering why one of the popular nicknames for CNN is Communist News Network, allow Michelle Malkin to explain (I’ll skip the horticulture pics):

Concerned Young Undecided Person "Journey" = John Edwards supporter "Journey"
Concerned Undecided Log Cabin Republican supporter David Cercone = Obama supporter David Cercone
Concerned Undecided Mom LeeAnn Anderson = Activist for the John Edwards-endorsing United Steelworkers union LeeAnn Anderson
Concerned Undecided Gay Military Retiree Brig. Gen. Keith H. Kerr = Hillary/Kerry supporter and anti-"Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" activist Keith H. Kerr

Unlike Michelle, I am not giving CNN the benefit of the doubt, especially with Kerr. A self-respecting propoganda organization wouldn’t bring somebody in to be part of the live audience unless they knew every last detail.

Revisions/extensions (7:58 am 11/29/2007) – I swear I didn’t break Michelle’s site (seriously, it’s a combination of an Instalanche and a Drudge Crush). In the interim, the overflow at Hot Air is open.

R&E part 2 (8:24 am 11/29/2007) – An eagle-eyed commenter at the Hot Air overflow thread is claiming CNN is trying to erase history vis-a-vis the Hillary plant. When are they going to learn that scrubbing after the fact doesn’t work. Side note; those of you with video of this, find somewhere other than YouTube/Google to put that video up; I expect that they’ll be scrubbing as well. Hell, send it to me, and I’ll host it.

Bumper-crop R&E (8:50 am 11/29/2007) – Make that 6 plants (H/T – Doc). From Jason Coleman, plant #5 is Ted Faturos, former intern for Rep. Jane Harman (D-California), whose question was on farm subsidies. Plant #6 is David McMillan, Breck Girl supporter and Uncle-Tom hunter (appropriate, because his question was why Pubbies weren’t attracting the black vote). He also found a couple of Paul-Nuts sprinkled in for “levity”.

Overflowing-bushel R&E (4:02 pm 11/29/2007) – And we’re up to 8 out of 30 (not 40) questions. With a tip of the cap to Flip, PowerLine has plant #7 as Adam Florzak, who worked with Dick Durbin on Social Security reform and asked a question on Social Security, and plant #8 as Mark Strauss, an admitted Bill Richardson supporter who played a PaulNut on BoobTube (what, they couldn’t find an actual PaulNut, or are all the PauNuts actually DhimmiRATs?). Un-fucking-real.

Atlast Mugged

by @ 12:31. Filed under Presstitute Follies.

Ed Driscoll has an excellent column and video on how the stranglehold the LeftStream Media had on the reporting of news got shattered. I would do you and Ed a disservice to even try to choose what to excerpt. However, there is a quote from TimeWarner CEO Richard Parsons that needs to be commented on: "The Googles of the world, they are the Custer of the modern world. We are the Sioux nation. They will lose this war if they go to war. The notion that the new kids on the block have taken over is a false notion."

It makes me sad to realize that the failure to teach history began long before my generation. Yes, the Sioux massacred the 7th Cavalry at Little Big Horn. However, there is a reason why South Dakota is part of the United States and not the country of Sioux Nation; that battle came before the one at Wounded Knee. There’s a lot more of “us” than there are of “them”.

Now, go read and watch.

What’s the frequency, Kenneth?

by @ 16:41. Filed under Lawsuit madness, Presstitute Follies.

Ed Driscoll, who has the title of the year (“The Blogosphere Full Employment Act Of 2007, Part Deux”), delves into the target-rich environment of Gunga Dan RaTHer’s lawsuit against CBS. While Ed focuses on the admission that RaTHer is Ted Baxter, let’s delve into another couple of paragraphs from the E! News story:

In the 32-page filing, Rather claims that (former CBS News president Andrew) Heyward pressed him to focus on the other stories he was working on at the time, such as Bill Clinton’s heart surgery and Hurricane Frances, rather than delve into the Bush story.

Rather, who along with Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw made up one of the most recognizable triumvirate of network news anchors in history, alleges that he served as little more than a glorified narrator for the Bush report and that it was CBS which forced him to issue a public apology on Sept. 20, 2004"””despite his own personal feelings that no public apology from him was warranted.”

If RaTHer was little more than a glorified narrator on his, Mary Richards’, and Murray Slaughter’s personal vendetta against President Bush, why shouldn’t Heyward get him to focus on other stories? Morever, since RaTHer is the public face of CBS News, it is proper that he deliver the apology. If he didn’t want to do it, the door swings out as well as in.
