No Runny Eggs

The repository of one hard-boiled egg from the south suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (and the occassional guest-blogger). The ramblings within may or may not offend, shock and awe you, but they are what I (or my guest-bloggers) think.

Dog day afternoon

by @ 22:28. Filed under Miscellaneous.

Spent the afternoon and part of the evening mirroring a rapidly-failing hard drive (twice it had popped up the “Unmountable Boot Volume” error, and that means absolutely, positively no access until CHKDSK run off a recovery disk gives an all-clear) onto a replacement (provided by Dell under warranty) at my younger sister’s and future brother-in-law’s. It SHOULD have been about a hour job, but because Dell never did provide a drive-mirroring product and Norton Save and Restore does not quite like bad sectors (one time crashing the computer so badly that it took CHKDSK the better part of an hour to put the old drive back together, and that was without a surface scan), I ended up working through to dinner. It still was better less time-consuming than the alternative, which would have been to do a clean install of everything (and it took 2 tries to get the right OS out of Dell; the first time they sent XP Home SP2 instead of XP Media Edition 2005). The only positive things I can say about Dell this time around are they’ve made their cases tool-free, not only to get into but for hard drives as well; and they sent out a Western Digital 80 GB SATA drive to replace the POS Hitachi 80 GB SATA that couldn’t even last a year.

The payoff dinner was good (at least for a bachelor), and the FBIL and I split 4 games of 4-handed cribbage against my sister and dad (who was there to work on a sink that got damaged due to frozen pipes), but 6 hours in a house with 2 friendly (1 crazy and 1 lapdog rottweiler/shepard mix) dogs finally got to my allergies. Disk Defrag, which began at the start of cribbage, was still running when I left.

Edwards’ announcement part two – Elizabeth has bone cancer, John still in the race

by @ 11:27. Filed under Politics - National.

Sounds like they caught it early enough to keep it treatable, but the bad news is that it’s not curable. May God rest His healing hand on her and drive the cancer back into submission.

Revisions/extensions (11:30 am 3/22/2007) – It took the media a couple questions to get to the political ramifications. John will continue his campaign.

Edwards’ announcement

by @ 9:48. Filed under Politics - National.

The blogosphere has been in an uproar since a late-night surprise announcement of a pending press conference to be held by John and Elizabeth Edwards at 11 am Central to discuss the better half’s health. Elizabeth had been diagnosed with breast cancer shortly before the 2004 election (where John fell short of becoming VP), with the cancer in remission as of the last time they made that news public. This presser comes after the latest test and follow-up visit, with speculation that the results led John to cut short a campaign swing through Iowa, but not a fund-raiser back in North Carolina.

Here’s hoping that good news is no news, and if there is news, that God rests His healing hand on Elizabeth.

<cynic=on>Of course, this could be cover for John to depart the 2008 Presidential race in such a way to salvage his 2012 hopes. There is an ongoing investigation into whether a major Edwards donor, Paul Minor, illegally reimbursed members of his family who gave money to Edwards’ campaign (hmmm, sounds a lot like what Dennis Troha stands accused of doing). That would not be the first time that an Edwards supporter, and Edwards’ campaign itself, has been nailed for this (thanks for the archive, Overlawyered.com).<cynic=off>

Revisions/extensions (11:07 am 3/22/2007) – The widespread speculation is that there has been a recurrance of Elizabeth’s cancer, and that John will be suspending his campaign. Not good. I’ll have more in the next post once they do make an announcement.

Further revisions/extensions (11:14 am 3/22/2007) – Fox News’ Carl Cameron is reporting that the Edwards campaign staffers don’t know exactly what this is about, but they’re denying the campaign suspension. Methinks they’re reaching because they don’t want to have to find other jobs for the next year.

A few fringe actors, or what the left really is?

Bryan has compiled a list, complete with links, of a heap of “fringe actors” acting out over at Hot Air.

Attorney-gate; a right, yet naiive, take

by @ 7:24. Filed under Politics - National.

Former Assistant US Attorney Jeff Wagner eloquently explains why Attorney-gate is a whole lot about nothing. However, it’s not about the attorneys, or even about Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. It’s all about finding a way to snooker 16 RINO Senators into doing what not a single ‘Rat would do in 1999.

Indeed, this is much like the one-vote-short-of-success play Congress pulled in 1867-1868. Andrew Johnson, who took over when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, wanted to get rid of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Congress, which loved Stanton, passed what proved to be an unconstitutional law requiring Senate approval for any firings of anybody whose appointment was confirmed by the Senate (sound familiar, class?). Johnson damned the torpedoes and fired Stanton; Congress followed with impeachment and a trial.

What else was “found” on Busalacchi’s Palm Pilot

by @ 6:49. Filed under Politics - Wisconsin.

If you believe that an unaltered copy of DOT Secretary Frank Busalacchi’s calendar from 2003 and 2004 was found on his Palm Pilot after it was erased from state servers, not only do I have a bridge to sell you, but I have a list of other things found on there:

  • The location of Noah’s Ark (the real one, not the water park in the Dells)
  • A recording of Jimmy Hoffa’s burial
  • The 800 FBI files the Clintons took
  • Former Senate “Republican Leader” Dale Schultz’s cajones
  • Busalacchi’s real NCAA bracket, which had a rematch of Marquette and Wisconsin (after Marquette beats UW-Parkside)
  • The identity of this year’s mole on “24”
  • The mission profile for Wing Attack Plan “R”
