He helps me with lots of things but will not loan me a penny. He says I have to stand on my own two feet in everything, and he won’t hurt me by giving me a financial crutch.

Several years ago he taught me a lesson about saying what you mean and meaning what you say. He wanted me to attend a seminar that was to cover a three-day weekend. It featured nationally recognized speakers and a lot of one on one workshops in the Self Help field. The cost was $500.00. I told him I was going to attend.

As the weekend approached, I became less inclined to attend, and besides, coming up with the funds to attend wasn’t as easy as I thought. He insisted I pay cash and NOT use a credit card to attend, as that would be ‘counter productive.’

Finally I had to tell him I just couldn’t afford to attend the Seminar. He said that was fine and there would be others in the future, but if I didn’t want to attend them then not to commit to attending in the first place. I insisted that I did want to attend but could not afford it at this time.

A few days later he called me with a plumb offer. He said, “Hey John, Dan Xxxxxx (a mutual lawyer friend of ours) has a divorce going down. The Judge has ordered his client to sell his Porsche 924 and provide the Wife with the proceeds.”

Well that perked me up a bit. He continued, “Dan has told him to sell it for $500.00. But since Dan’s my attorney too, we can’t do that. You, on the other hand, have no real connection to Dan. Can you come up with the cash?”

I said, “Yes i can, how soon will I need it?”

He said, “I’ll call you tomorrow, if you have it I’ll let you know where to meet.”

He called me the next day, “John, were you able to come up with the $500.00 cash?”

I said, “Yes, I have it in hand.”

He said, “Good, you can attend the Seminar now.” And hung up.

What he taught me was important:
1) I really wanted the Porsche, which is why I was able to find the $500.00 in less than 12 hours.
2) I felt that I should want the Seminar which is why I went through the motions of looking for the $500.00 to attend, but couldn’t really come up with it.

Republicans went through the motions on the continuing resolution, and they went through the motions on the debt ceiling because they felt they should want it.

But the reason they didn’t walk away once CC&B was on the talbe is that they didn’t really want it.
