The repository of one hard-boiled egg from the south suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (and the occassional guest-blogger). The ramblings within may or may not offend, shock and awe you, but they are what I (or my guest-bloggers) think.Fri, 19 Dec 2008 22:58:27 +0000

FWIW, Chrysler repaid the LOAN early, too! What Bush did was a gift, whether he calls it that or not.
I repeat: Fuck Bush!

The steelworkers, PATCO and NWA mechanics didn’t have a totality of government ready, willing and able to bail them out.

Or the Air Traffic Controllers or the NWA mechanics.

That is not to say I am entirely opposed to the government providing DIP financing. On balance, however, the fact that the government is now in long-term debt to the tune greater than the aggregate value of all the assets in the country, as well as the general principle that government shouldn’t be in the business of owning business does have to weigh against the chance of Chapter 11 turning into Chapter 7.
As for the bailout, this is more like a situation faced by Studebaker/Nash/et al (and indeed, American Motors post-Renault) than Chrysler in 1979. Unlike that singular event (when Chrysler Defense was the producer of the M-1 Abrams tank), there is no significant defense involvement with the Big Three.

Without XI, someone will be negotiating without a knife at their neck while others will…that never works. All parties need to feel the edge of the knife for this to work.

Gummint is the only one who’s big enough to provide DIP finance, so let that happen.
