The repository of one hard-boiled egg from the south suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (and the occassional guest-blogger). The ramblings within may or may not offend, shock and awe you, but they are what I (or my guest-bloggers) think.

Something else that hasn't been analyzed to a fare-thee-well:
the quality of Detroit products has been increasing steadily since the early 1980's. I have driven Detroit products to between 175-200K miles--a FAR cry from the norm of the 1960's'70's.

They shoulda started slowing production about 6-10 years ago.

Dad, you're right. I think they limit to about $52K/year or so.

As I was writing this, it struck me that Detroit had a lot of parallels with the housing stuff...spending money based on a hope that the trend line held.

Some may argue that by filing for bankruptcy the US tax payer will end up paying for the unfunded liabilities of the pension and health plan as they are insured by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. While that is true, I suspect we're going to be ultimately responsible for it anyway. By forcing the issue now we can stop the bleeding

Yah, but there's a SERIOUS difference between the promises made by the Big 2.105 and the PBGC's payouts.

Ask anyone who retired from Allis-Chalmers (another UAW hotspot.)
