LeMay was in budget hearings for nukes during the early ’60s. The chairman was the late, great Sen. Everett (“A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money.”) Dirkson.

Anyway, the exchange went something like this:

LeMay: I need funding for X number of nuke warheads.
Dirkson: General, you just told us that X/2 warheads would be enough to reduce the USSR to cinders; why do you need more?
LeMay: Senator, I want to see those cinders dance.

LeMay got the money.
