The questions that Owen’s and Wendy’s 6th-grader had to answer are over there. My mostly-correct answers, including a wholesale criticism of one of those questions, are below the fold.

1. British soccer athlete David Beckham has recently signed to play with an American professional team, the LA Galaxy. His contract pays him $25 million.

2. The US military recently bombed (one, two, three) village(s) in Somalia in an unsuccessful attempt to kill three (al Qaeda, Taliban) terrorist members. 5. The newly organized (House, Senate) has begun work on its agenda and has passed a bill that would raise the (maximum, minimum) wage from $5.35 per hour to $7.25 per hour. 9. This new legislation will impact 7.5 million American workers who currently earn less than $7.25 an hour.

10. Last night President George W. Bush gave the president’s annual report to Congress called the State of the Union speech.

11. This annual speech was included as part of the US (Bill of Rights, Constitution). For many years the report was just read to the combined Congress, but in 1935, it was first broadcast by (cable, radio, television) None of the above. This last sentence is quite incorrect. For many years, between 1801 and 1913 (with a couple of exceptions), this message was transmitted to Congress via a letter, with that letter also being sent to newspapers to be printed either in full or in part. As for broadcast, the first radio broadcast of what was to later become known as the State of the Union speech was in 1923, with the first television broadcast in 1947.
